Deepti Sharma Leads India's World Cup Charge With Career-Best Spell Against Pakistan
India's Women's T20 World Cup campaign could hardly have begun in more emphatic fashion.
A dominant victory over arch-rivals Pakistan was headlined by Deepti Sharma's record-breaking five-wicket haul, a spell that not only dismantled the opposition batting line-up but also underlined India's credentials as one of the favourites for the title.

Speaking after the match on JioStar's Adidas Match Centre Live, Deepti reflected on a performance that will likely rank among the finest of her international career.
"For me, the five-wicket haul was the most special moment," she said. "It's very rare in an ICC tournament to pick up a fifer and end up winning the game for your team."
The experienced all-rounder finished with figures that changed the complexion of the contest after Pakistan had made a promising start during the Powerplay. While India's bowlers were initially put under pressure, the team's calm approach during the first drinks break proved crucial.
According to Deepti, the message within the group was simple: stay positive and trust the process.
"When the first drinks break happened, the discussion was about stepping up a little because we know the quality of talent and players we have in our side," she said. "Even if you go for runs in one over, it doesn't matter because you'll get a chance to make a comeback in the next."
That mindset paid dividends as India's bowlers gradually tightened their grip on the game before Deepti's spell effectively shut the door on Pakistan's hopes.
Experience Guiding the Next Generation
As one of the senior figures in the squad, Deepti continues to play a key mentoring role for India's younger bowlers, including Shreyanka Patil and Shree Charani.
The off-spinner revealed that her advice remains rooted in simplicity and self-belief rather than overcomplicating plans.
"I tell them to stick to what has been working for them," Deepti explained. "Read the conditions and, if you feel your best ball or your best plans can bring you success on that wicket, then back them and leave the rest to the Almighty."
For a young Indian bowling unit entering a major tournament, that confidence could prove invaluable as the competition progresses.
Fielding Standards Continue to Rise
Beyond the wickets, one of the standout aspects of India's performance was their fielding effort.
Several difficult chances were converted, including impressive catches by Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, highlighting the work the squad has put in behind the scenes.
India spent significant time focusing on fitness and fielding during a pre-tournament camp at the Centre of Excellence, and Deepti believes the rewards were visible immediately.
"We worked extensively on our fielding and fitness before the World Cup," she said. "The catches weren't easy. Whether it was Smriti's diving catch or Jemimah's effort, it's great to see the team putting in that kind of work."
The improvements offer another encouraging sign for a side looking to build on last year's ODI World Cup triumph.
Thriving on the Biggest Stage
While many players feel additional pressure in ICC events, Deepti appears to embrace it.
Her latest match-winning display continues a growing reputation for delivering on cricket's biggest stages.
"I enjoy ICC tournaments," she said. "It's not as though we were playing against Pakistan and came in with a different mindset. I approach every game with the same mindset."
That consistency has become one of India's biggest strengths in recent years, with experienced campaigners such as Deepti setting the standard for the rest of the squad.
"When you want to perform in pressure situations and want to do well from the moment you begin your run-up, it toughens you up and helps you deliver irrespective of the situation or the conditions," she added.
Focus Shifts to the Netherlands
India's attention now turns to their second Group 1 fixture against the Netherlands at Headingley.
Although the team has not yet played at the venue during this tournament, Deepti believes India's recent tour of England provides a valuable advantage.
"Fortunately, we had a series in England before the World Cup, so we already have some understanding of the conditions," she said. "We'll take the positives from this game into the next one."
With momentum on their side and confidence flowing through the squad, India have made the ideal start to their pursuit of a maiden Women's T20 World Cup title.
And if Deepti Sharma continues to produce performances like this, the road ahead could become increasingly exciting for the Women in Blue.
