Delhi Capitals Turn to Jemimah Rodrigues for Captaincy Ahead of WPL 2026: Report

Delhi Capitals are set to usher in a new leadership era in the Women's Premier League, with Jemimah Rodrigues poised to take over as captain from the 2026 season. As reported by Cricbuzz, the franchise is expected to formally announce the decision on Tuesday, December 23, with DC already teasing a special reveal across their social media platforms.

Rodrigues will succeed Australian great Meg Lanning, who was released ahead of the WPL 2026 mega auction. While Delhi Capitals explored the possibility of bringing Lanning back, they were outbid by UP Warriorz, who secured the former Australia captain for ₹1.9 crore. The Capitals, however, had made their leadership direction clear much earlier.

At a franchise event in Delhi, co-owner Parth Jindal had publicly stated DC's intention to hand the captaincy to an Indian player. "I think we are very clear that we would like to have an Indian as the captain... Laura will add a lot of leadership into the dressing room but we are clear that we want to go with an Indian captain," Jindal had said. That vision now appears set to materialise with Rodrigues at the helm.

A central figure for the franchise since the league's inception, Rodrigues was Delhi Capitals' first-ever signing at the inaugural WPL auction three years ago. Since then, she has emerged as one of the team's most reliable performers and a leader within the dressing room. The top-order batter is currently DC's third-highest run-scorer in WPL history, having amassed 507 runs at a strike rate of 139.66, trailing only Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma.

Rodrigues' leadership credentials were further enhanced earlier this year during India's triumphant World Cup campaign, where she played a defining role. Her match-winning century in the semi-final against Australia proved pivotal in India's march to the title and elevated her stature as a big-match player.

Delhi Capitals will hope Rodrigues' appointment can help them finally cross the final hurdle. Despite consistently reaching the summit clash, DC have finished runners-up in all three WPL seasons so far. With a new captain, renewed ambition, and a strong squad that includes South Africa star Laura Wolvaardt, the franchise will be aiming to turn consistency into championship success in 2026.
