From Promise to Reinvention: Devdutt Padikkal's Journey Back to His Best in IPL 2026
Bengaluru, April 7: Devdutt Padikkal's story in IPL 2026 is not just about runs - it is about rediscovery. In the fast-paced T20 tournament that often celebrates instant impact, Padikkal's resurgence stands out for a different reason: it has been built over time, through setbacks, self-doubt, and a conscious decision to evolve.
With scores of 50 off 29 against Chennai Super Kings and 61 off 26 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter has made a statement early this season. Two matches, 111 runs, and a strike rate north of 200 - numbers that reflect not just form, but transformation.

The Rise: A Prodigy with Poise
Padikkal first burst onto the IPL scene (in the IPL 2020 season) as a technically sound, elegant top-order batter. Calm under pressure and capable of building innings, the left-handed batter quickly became one of RCB's most dependable young players.
He wasn't just scoring runs-he was doing it with a composure that belied his age. But T20 cricket is unforgiving. As the format evolved, so did expectations. Strike rates climbed, intent became non-negotiable, and players were forced to adapt or risk being left behind.
The Dip: When Answers Went Missing
For Padikkal, that phase brought questions he didn't immediately have answers to. He had a dull season in 2024, when he scored 38 runs in 7 matches for Rajasthan Royals with 13 being the highest, before getting reunited with RCB in IPL 2025. "When things didn't go well, I didn't have answers. But that phase gave me that motivation and that fire to get better," he admitted.
It was a period that could have defined him - but instead, it refined him. "Sometimes you need those failures along your journey to remind you how much harder you need to work," he added.
The Turning Point: A Return Home
The Karnataka boy's return to RCB in 2025 proved to be a defining moment. There was familiarity, yes-but more importantly, there was intent.
RCB's batting coach Dinesh Karthik recalled Padikkal's mindset upon rejoining the franchise. "He said, 'I couldn't be happier playing for any other team than RCB... I'm here and I want to make a difference. Just tell me what you need.' From day one, he was a man on a mission," Karthik revealed.
That clarity translated into action.
Padikkal committed himself to change-not incremental tweaks, but a complete shift in approach.
Reinvention: Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone
For a batter who had grown up playing a certain way, adapting wasn't easy.
"When I got the opportunity with RCB again, I knew there were things I needed to change. It's not easy when you've grown up playing a certain way... but it was important to come out of that comfort zone," Padikkal said.
He could have chosen the safer route-leaning into red-ball cricket, where his technique naturally thrived. Instead, he chose the harder path: evolving into a modern T20 batter.
The results began to show in 2025 itself, when he scored 247 runs at a strike rate of 150 in 10 matches.
The Resurgence: A New Version of Padikkal
IPL 2026 is now showcasing the finished product of that process.
His half-century against CSK was a blend of control and aggression. The 61 against SRH, however, was something more-a glimpse of a batter operating at a completely different tempo.
"I feel a lot calmer and more composed now. I understand what I need to do to be at my best," Padikkal reflected.
There is a visible shift-not just in his shot selection, but in his mindset.
Maturity Meets Intent
Perhaps the biggest change is internal.
"In 2020-21, I was a lot more scared as a young kid. Over the years, I've learned to handle everything that comes with the IPL," he said.
That learning has brought with it a sense of calm-a trait often overlooked in a format driven by aggression.
India Calling?
For Dinesh Karthik, Padikkal's evolution is not just impressive-it is significant.
"If he continues like this, I don't think Team India can ignore him across formats. He is batting at a level which is a touch above a lot of others," Karthik said.
It's a strong endorsement-and one that reflects how far Padikkal has come.
A Story Beyond Numbers
At 25, Padikkal's journey is far from complete. But what makes his current form compelling is the path he has taken to get here.
This isn't just a player in form. This is a player who has rebuilt himself. In a league that often rewards instant success, Padikkal's story is a reminder that sometimes, the most meaningful comebacks are the ones that take time.
And two games into IPL 2026, Devdutt Padikkal isn't just scoring runs-he's redefining himself.
