Dreams are the seedlings of reality, a famous quote once said. And if anyone embodies that sentiment, it’s Dhruv Jurel, the Rajasthan Royals’ wicketkeeper-batsman. His story is like something you’d read in a book where perseverance, sacrifices, and a burning passion for cricket are the central themes. But this isn't just any fantasy — it's a real-life journey of a young boy who dared to dream big and chased that dream, no matter how many hurdles life threw his way.
Raised by a Kargil war veteran father, Nem Singh Jurel, who envisioned his son following in his footsteps to serve the nation, Dhruv Jurel, 23, was a square peg in a round hole. His heart was never set on the military. Instead, it beat for cricket, a sport that wasn’t even in his family’s bloodline. At first, his father’s reluctance to support this dream was obvious, but the love and dedication Dhruv showed for the game eventually changed everything.

When you think about cricket, you usually think about the glam, the glitz, the stadium lights, and the packed crowds. But for Dhruv Jurel, the journey was filled with back-breaking struggles. At the age of 5, he was caught in an accident that nearly derailed his life (via The Guardian). A bus ran over his left leg, and he had to undergo plastic surgery. But did that stop him? Not a chance. His resolve to play cricket only grew stronger with each passing year.
Fast forward to his teenage years, Dhruv was sneaking off to compete in school tournaments, often hiding his growing interest from his father, who had his own set of ideas about his son's future. It was a close call when his father once came across a newspaper article about a young cricketer named Dhruv Jurel, and his first thought was that it couldn't possibly be his son. "He was reading the newspaper and suddenly told me, 'There is a cricketer that goes by the same name as you, and he has scored these many runs.’ I got scared and did not know how to tell him this cricketer was me," Dhruv recalled with a nervous chuckle (via Indian Express).
At just 13 years old, Dhruv took matters into his own hands. Leaving home, without a parent in tow, he set out alone from Agra to Noida to train at the renowned Phool Chand Academy. Can you picture that? A 13-year-old, brimming with confidence but with nothing but a dream in his pocket, knocking on the doors of an academy. His coach, Phool Chand, recalled (via PTI), “I didn’t see any parent accompanying him. I thought maybe he’s a local boy from Noida, but then he said, 'Sir, I have come all alone from Agra, and the friend who promised to arrange my accommodation at his house isn't picking up my call.’”
Fast forward to today, Dhruv Jurel is not just a part of the Rajasthan Royals team but a rising star in Indian cricket. He has played for India A and is steadily making his mark on the IPL scene. He has faced his fair share of obstacles, but his unwavering determination, backed by his parents’ sacrifices, has brought him closer to his dream of wearing the Indian jersey.
