Did Jasprit Bumrah take a Subtle dig at Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya after making Captaincy Debut?
In a historic moment for Mumbai Indians, Jasprit Bumrah led the five-time champions for the first time in his IPL career against Punjab Kings in Match 58 of IPL 2026 at the HPCA Stadium here on Thursday.
With regular skipper Hardik Pandya sidelined by a back spasm and stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav unavailable due to personal reasons, the star pacer stepped up as MI's third captain this season.

Bumrah, who has played 156 matches before captaining - second only to Ravindra Jadeja's 200 - won the toss and elected to bowl first, citing the evening conditions. "It feels good. I came here as a 19-year-old. This is a new challenge and I will look to have fun," he said at the toss.
Why is Jasprit Bumrah captaining Mumbai Indians?
Struggling Mumbai Indians take on Punjab Kings without regular captain Hardik Pandya, who has been ruled out due to a back spasm. The all-rounder's absence has forced the five-time champions to hand over leadership to Jasprit Bumrah for the first time in his 157-match IPL career. There have been reports about a possible fallout between Hardik and MI management, and the player may seek pastures new. Apart from that, Suryakumar Yadav also missed out due to personal reasons, which led to Bumrah's arrival as captain.
Did Jasprit Bumrah take a Subtle Dig at MI?
While attending for the toss, Bumrah was told about the long wait for captaincy, and the pace star made a subtle comment while expressing his feelings.
"I didn't think that I'll be a Test captain before I'll captain Mumbai Indians. But this is a fun place to be. You look after everyone and you want to contribute in whatever way possible. So, I like responsibility. This is a new challenge. I'll look to have fun," Bumrah said at the toss.
The transition from Rohit Sharma to Hardik Pandya in 2024 was a tumultuous one for Mumbai Indians. Pandya was traded in from Gujarat Titans and was appointed captain, ahead of Bumrah or Suryakumar Yadav. Under Pandya, MI are in their third season and have now been eliminated from the group stages twice.
Bumrah was a strong contender for captaincy, but the star bowler has been made waiting for years before Thursday, as he leads the Paltans for the first time.
