Did Rashid Khan Break Promise by Getting Married Before Afghanistan Won World Cup?

By MyKhel Staff

Star leg-spinner Rashid Khan tied the knot on Thursday (October 3) in Aghanistan's capital city Kabul as the grand wedding celebration videos and pictures from the venue went viral on social media.

The Afghan spinner had his wedding according to the Pashtun customs with many cricketers from the Afghanistan national cricket team, including Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, attending the event.

While the picture and videos from his wedding venue created immense social media buzz, the Afghan spinner was trolled for breaking one of his promises from four years ago, when he had reportedly told he would only get married after Afghanistan win the World Cup during an interview with Azadi Radio.

"Afghanistan cricketer Rashid Khan "I will only get engaged & then married once Afghanistan win the World Cup," Pakistani journalist Saj Sadiq had posted on X in 2020.

However, those quotes were misinterpreted as the star spinner had never made any such promises, and he had said he will think about wedding only when Afghanistan reach a good position in cricket.

Rashid Khan nearly led Afghanistan to World Cup glory earlier this year, but were knocked out by South Africa in the lop-sided semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados.

The Afghan star cricketer's wedding venue videos went viral as people were spotted carrying guns outside the hotel that hosted Rashid's wedding ceremony in Kabul. The pictures went viral after the Afghan cricket community shared images from the ceremony.

Rashid's longtime teammate, Mohammad Nabi, one of the veterans in the Afghanistan team, was among the first of his compatriots to congratulate him on he occasion.

"Congratulations to the one and only King Khan, Rashid Khan, on your wedding! Wishing you a lifetime of love, happiness, and success ahead. @rashidkhan_19," he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

It was not only Rashid who tied the knot on October 3, but even his three brothers had their wedding ceremony on the same day as more images surfaced from the celebrations.

Rashid Khan, who is one of the top spinners in white ball cricket, has claimed over 600 wickets in the shortest format, having featured in the many T20 leagues across the world, including the Indian Premier League.
