Double Standards Exposed! Oval Pitch Curator Allowed Brendon McCullum But NOT Gautam Gambhir

Tensions flared two days ahead of the fifth and final Test between India and England at The Oval, after Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir confronted Surrey's chief curator Lee Fortis during a pitch inspection session.

The clash, which occurred on Tuesday during India's training, has raised eyebrows over what the Indian team perceives as differential treatment between them and their English counterparts.

The friction reportedly began when Fortis instructed the Indian coaching staff to maintain a distance of 2.5 metres from the pitch while observing the surface. This did not go down well with the Indian contingent, particularly because they were wearing joggers and not spikes. "It was a bit surprising," batting coach Sitanshu Kotak remarked. "Day after, there is a Test match, and we were just taking a look at the surface wearing joggers, not spikes. I've never seen anything like that in my life."

What stung the Indian team even more was the fact that England head coach Brendon McCullum and ECB's managing director Rob Key were allowed a casual pitch walkthrough the previous day without any restrictions. "That's what made it awkward. England's staff came in the day before in casual clothes and nobody told them where to stand or not stand," Kotak pointed out.

The matter reached boiling point when Fortis, in front of players and staff, told an Indian support staff member to move a 10-kilo cooling box away from the main square. Gambhir intervened sharply: "You don't tell any of us what we need to do, you have no right to tell us, you are just a groundsman, nothing beyond."

Fortis responded: "I will have to report this."

Kotak attempted to calm things down and later said, "Gautam just said, 'Don't talk to our support staff like that.' It's natural for any head coach to step in when someone talks down to the team."

He added pointedly: "This isn't an antique that'll break if you touch it." Despite the incident, India has opted not to lodge a formal complaint.
