Double Standards in IPL? Digvesh Rathi Faces Ban While MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli Walk Free, Says Sehwag

In a season brimming with emerging talent, Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) young spinner Digvesh Rathi has been one of the standout performers in IPL 2025. With his sharp turn, calm temperament under pressure, and clutch performances, the left-arm spinner has drawn widespread praise.

Yet, Rathi has made just as many headlines for his animated celebrations and disciplinary run-ins with the IPL authorities.

Digvesh Rathi

Rathi's now-infamous 'notebook celebration' - where he mimics taking notes after taking a wicket - became an instant viral moment. While some fans enjoyed the theatrical flair, match officials didn't share the enthusiasm. The celebration has cost him dearly, earning him multiple fines and eventually a one-match ban.

The Disciplinary Timeline

April 1 vs Punjab Kings: Rathi was fined 25% of his match fee and given one demerit point for the celebration after dismissing Priyansh Arya.

April 4 vs Mumbai Indians: Repeating the gesture after Naman Dhir's dismissal led to a 50% fine and two more demerit points.

May 19 vs Sunrisers Hyderabad: A third repeat - this time after taking Abhishek Sharma's wicket - brought another 50% fine and two more demerit points, taking his total tally to five and resulting in an automatic one-match suspension.

The punishment meted out to Rathi has triggered a debate on fairness and consistency in how the IPL handles disciplinary issues. Former India opener Virender Sehwag criticized the decision on Cricbuzz, calling the suspension overly harsh.

"It's only his first season. He's young and learning. A one-match ban was too much," Sehwag remarked. "MS Dhoni once entered the field mid-match and didn't get banned. Virat Kohli has argued with umpires multiple times - no suspension there either. Digvesh could've been let off with a warning."

His remarks have struck a chord with fans, many of whom now question whether younger or lesser-known players are treated more strictly compared to veterans or icons of the game.

Rathi was again at the centre of controversy when he attempted to run out Jitesh Sharma at the non-striker's end - a dismissal well within the laws of cricket but often debated in the context of sportsmanship. LSG captain Rishabh Pant withdrew the appeal, earning applause for upholding the "Spirit of Cricket."

However, renowned commentator Harsha Bhogle had a different take. "If the umpire felt the batter was in, fine - give it not out. But constantly invoking the 'Spirit of Cricket' instead of the laws is unfair. Let the rules govern the game," he tweeted.

Rathi's journey reflects the fire and passion of the IPL's new generation, but it also raises uncomfortable questions. Are young players under closer scrutiny? Do big names get more lenient treatment for similar offences?

While the debate rages on, what remains clear is that Digvesh Rathi is not just a bowler with potential - he's a player unafraid to express himself. How the IPL handles personalities like his will play a role in shaping not just his career, but the tone of the league moving forward.

As the tournament heads into its knockout stages, all eyes will be on whether the young spinner returns stronger - and whether the system around him becomes fairer.
