Duleep Trophy 2024: Why is Suryakumar Yadav Missing from Round 1?

Suryakumar Yadav has been ruled out of the opening round of the 2024 Duleep Trophy due to a hand injury sustained during a pre-season fixture for Mumbai at the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament in Coimbatore.

The dynamic batter is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru for a routine assessment. The injury occurred while fielding on the third day of the match against TNCA XI last week, forcing Suryakumar to skip batting in the second innings.

The Mumbai team management confirmed the decision as a precautionary measure to protect his availability for the Duleep Trophy. However, following further evaluation, Suryakumar has been advised to rest and recover, which has led to his exclusion from the opening round.

Suryakumar, who captains India's T20I team, has shown a keen interest in making a Test comeback. Having not played first-class cricket for over a year, he decided to participate in the Buchi Babu Invitational Tournament to prepare himself for the upcoming red-ball season.

India is scheduled to play 10 Test matches over the next five months, starting with a two-match series against Bangladesh in Chennai on September 19. Suryakumar's determination to prove his mettle in red-ball cricket aligns with India's challenging Test schedule.

Initially, Suryakumar was named in the India C squad, led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, for the Duleep Trophy's first-round fixture against Shreyas Iyer's India D in Anantapur. Despite his absence, the tournament has seen other prominent names ruled out.

Fast bowlers Mohammed Siraj and Umran Malik were also sidelined due to illness, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was withdrawn for unspecified reasons by the BCCI. Their replacements, Navdeep Saini and Gaurav Yadav, will step in for the India B and C squads, respectively.
