Duleep Trophy: Sudeep, Shahbaz star as East Zone thrash North East with Innings Victory, progress to Semis

An all-round clinical performance helped East Zone dismantle North East Zone by a massive margin of an innings and 210 runs in the first quarter-final of the Duleep Trophy.

Wrapping up the one-sided contest inside three days at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, East Zone confidently booked their spot in the semi-finals following a dominant display with both bat and ball.

The match did not start entirely on East Zone's terms. After North East Zone won the toss and elected to field, the East Zone top order stumbled early on the opening morning. The batting lineup found itself in trouble, reduced to 138 for 5 in the first session. Fifteen-year-old sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fell for 8, while captain Ishan Kishan (4) also departed cheaply. Wicketkeeper Kumar Kushagra offered resistance with a solid 55, but his dismissal triggered a mini-collapse.

At this critical juncture, Sudip Kumar Gharami and Shahbaz Ahmed took total control of the innings. The duo stitched together a massive 150-run partnership for the sixth wicket to completely shift the momentum back in their team's favor. Gharami batted beautifully for his 146, while Shahbaz went on to register a career-best first-class score of 167 runs. Their counter-attack deflated the North East Zone bowling unit, eventually propelling East Zone to an imposing first-innings total of 467 all out in 112.5 overs. For North East Zone, Akash Choudhary and Pheiroijam Jotin Singh returned the best figures, picking up three wickets each.

Sarkar and Spinners Run Through the Lineup

Faced with a massive scoreboard deficit, the North East Zone batters failed to put up any significant fight. In their first innings, they were bowled out for a paltry 111 in just 42.5 overs. Tripura medium pacer Abhijit Sarkar was the chief destroyer for East Zone, ripping through the batting card to return exceptional figures of 5 for 20 in his 9.5 overs.

Opener Arpit Bhatewara was the only batter to show some grit, top-scoring with a sluggish 32. Forced to follow-on, North-East Zone's second innings merely mirrored the struggles of their first. Pheiroijam Jotin Singh fought a lonely battle with a top score of 39 off 75 balls, but the entire team folded for 146 in exactly 50 overs, handing East Zone a highly comfortable victory. The East Zone bowlers shared the spoils, with Shahbaz Ahmed, Anukul Roy, and even young Vaibhav Sooryavanshi who grabbed two quick wickets in a single over, chipping in to wrap up the tail.

Shahbaz Ahmed was rightly named Player of the Match for his outstanding 167 with the bat and for picking up four crucial wickets (3/20 and 1/53) across the two innings. The match clearly highlighted the massive gulf in quality between the two regional sides, allowing East Zone to advance without breaking much of a sweat.
