Duleep Trophy: Shreyas Iyer's opportunity to score big and come into the reckoning for the Indian Test team took a big hit after he was dismissed for a duck against India A in the Duleep Trophy 2024 second round match.
The India D captain's stay in the middle could last only seven balls as left-arm pacer Khaleel Ahmed sent him back to the pavilion in just the third over. Shreyas Iyer drove a full length delivery towards mid-on where Aaqib Khan took a sharp catch to help his team get rid of the dangerous Mumbai batter.

Iyer, who was dropped after the second Test against England earlier this year, and his central contract was not renewed for showing reluctance to play domestic cricket. The star batter led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to a title triumph in IPL 2024. He did not get a place in India's T20 World Cup squad, but was recalled in the team for the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
The 29-year-oId has once again missed the berth for the first Test against Bangladesh starting September 19. The seven-ball duck is only going to delay his comeback in the middle-order which is decked with the likes of Virat Kohli, K Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan and Rishabh Pant.
Further, India D wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson also failed in his first Duleep Trophy 2024 outing. He was dismissed for five off six balls by Aaqib in the 18h over. A miscued pull from Samson led to the ball skewing over mid-on where Prasidh Krishna made no mistakes.
29-year-old Samson made his India debut back in 2015, and has played over 60 first-class matches without playing a Test for India. He was part of India's T20 World Cup-winning team, but did not play any match. He got to play two T20I matches on the Sri Lanka tour but was dismissed for a duck on both occasions. The Kerala batter was not considered for the following ODI series.
After the fall of Samson's wicket, India D were left reeling at 52/4 in reply to India A's 290 in the first innings. Ishan Kishan smashed a hundred for Mayank Agarwal's India A in the first innings.
