Gautam Gambhir has been named the head coach of the Indian cricket team, as announced by BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday.
The former cricketer was a top contender for the role and will take over from Rahul Dravid, who led India to victory in the T20 World Cup during his tenure.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah shared the news of Gambhir's appointment on social media. "It is with immense pleasure that I welcome Mr @GautamGambhir as the new Head Coach of the Indian Cricket Team. Modern-day cricket has evolved rapidly, and Gautam has witnessed this changing landscape up close. Having endured the grind and excelled in various roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the ideal person to steer Indian Cricket forward," Shah wrote on X.
Gambhir has an impressive record as a mentor in the IPL. He guided the Lucknow Super Giants to playoff qualifications in both seasons he mentored them. His crowning achievement came with Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2024 when KKR clinched the title under his mentorship.
Gambhir's first task as India's head coach will be the upcoming series against Sri Lanka, starting on July 27. He will join the team before they head to Sri Lanka for a six-match limited-overs series, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is.
The new head coach is expected to travel with the team to Sri Lanka ahead of their matches. Gambhir will likely have input in selecting the squad for this series, marking his initial involvement in team decisions.

He then went on to add an emotional post expressing his privilege to serve the country in a new avatar.
"India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life. I'm honoured to be back, albeit wearing a different hat. But my goal is the same as it has always been, to make every Indian proud. The men in blue shoulder the dreams of 1.4 billion Indians and I will do everything in my power to make these dreams come true," Gambhir wrote.
