3rd Test: Shami shines again as India record remarkable overseas win, beat South Africa by 63 runs

Johannesburg, January 27: Mohammed Shami shined with a brilliant fifer in the second innings to help India beat South Africa by 63 runs in the third innings here on Saturday (January 27).

Chasing a target of 241, South Africa were bundled out for 177 thanks to a brilliant bowling effort from the visitors. Dean Elgar was the last man standing for the hosts and remained unbeaten at 86.

This is only the second time India have dismissed opponents in ALL the innings of a series (3 or more Tests). The only other time this happened was in 1986 in England.

India lost the series 2-1, but this win in the dead rubber could be termed as one of most courageous win overseas for Virat Kohli and his company.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar was awarded the man of the match for his all-round effort in the game while Vernon Philander was named the man of the series for his impressive bowling.

Earlier, Elgar and Hashim Amla frustrated India with a 119-run stand for the second wicket and almost denied visitors a win.

Match Scorecard

It was a brilliant day of cricket we have witnessed here from a neutral perspective. Unfortunately for South Africa, their hard work at the start of the day was unravelled as the pitch took hold and the bowlers found their line and lengths.

It was too difficult for the new batsman to play themselves in and a collapse has left them 63 runs short of India.

It really has been an entertaining Test match here at the Wanderers, albeit perhaps one surrounded with controversy, a result was reached an in an entertaining fashion nonetheless.

In a slight piece of irony, Elgar was left standing, carrying his bat through the most difficult of conditions after being hit in the helmet in a moment that brought a premature end to the third day's play.

The final wicket gave Shami his five-for, in a scintillating spell of bowling which helped swing this game back in their favour and ultimately hand India victory.

Earlier, the teams arrived on schedule at the Wanderers but had to wait for better conditions for play to resume. The umpires - Aleem Dar and Ian Gould - had two inspections at 10 am and 10.30 am (local time).

After the second inspection, they were happy enough to allow play to resume 30 minutes later. Finally, the game began at 11 am local time, with all three sessions rescheduled, after an hour's delay. The morning session was 90 minutes long.

Starting from their overnight score of 17/1, South Africa made steady progress and grilled the Indian bowlers in the first session and frustrated them for an almost first hour in the second session as well.

Shami returned with (5/28), Jasprit Bumrah (2/57), Ishant Sharma (2/31) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/39) were the ones who picked up the wickets for the visitors.
