In a historic finale, Afghanistan A emerged victorious in the Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024, defeating Sri Lanka A by seven wickets to claim their first-ever title. Afghanistan A's all-round display ensured a memorable win, marking a new chapter in the country's cricketing history.

Player of the tournament Sediqullah Atal scored a half-century for the victory once again after Afghan opening bowlers broke the backbone of the batting of Sri Lanka, who decided to bat first after winning the toss.

The Islanders faced an early collapse against Afghanistan A's disciplined bowling attack. Bilal Sami (3/22) and Allah Ghazanfar (2/14) wreaked havoc, reducing the Lankans to 13/3 within four overs. The Afghan pacers found sharp movement and bounce on a track offering assistance, making life difficult for the Sri Lankan top order.

The early breakthroughs left Sri Lanka A in disarray, and despite attempts to rebuild, they stumbled to 65/5 by the 12th over. Sahan Arachchige stood as the lone warrior, displaying resilience amid the carnage. His unbeaten 64, laced with key boundaries and smart running, helped the team recover to a respectable total of 133/7. Nimesh Vimukthi chipped in with a vital 23, adding crucial runs in the latter stages of the innings.

Chasing 134 for victory, Afghanistan A's innings got off to a rocky start, as Sri Lankan bowler Sahan Arachchige struck off the very first ball to dismiss opener Zubaid Akbari. With early nerves evident, Afghanistan A faced pressure but found stability through the calm heads of Sediqullah Atal and Darwish Rasooli.

The duo steadily built a partnership, with Atal taking on the anchor role. His composed innings of 55* proved to be the backbone of the chase, while Rasooli's 24 added vital support. Atal reached his half-century with a series of well-timed shots, including a six and a four in the 18th over, tilting the game firmly in Afghanistan A's favour.

Karim Janat played a crucial cameo, scoring a brisk 33 that included a few well-timed sixes. His aggressive approach put the Sri Lankan bowlers on the back foot, increasing the required rate pressure. Despite tight spells from Dushan Hemantha (1/26) and Eshan Malinga, the Afghan batters remained undeterred.

With the finish line in sight, Mohammad Ishaq joined Atal and smashed the winning boundary in the 19th over, sending the ball racing to the square leg fence. The victory triggered euphoric celebrations as the Afghan players embraced and shared their joy with the fans in a heartwarming victory lap.

Afghanistan A's seven-wicket win in the Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024 marks a significant milestone for their cricketing journey. The team's balanced approach with both bat and ball showcased their growing maturity on the international stage, signalling a bright future ahead.
