Bangladesh A secured a comprehensive five-wicket victory over Hong Kong in their opening match of the ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2024, thanks to a standout performance by bowler Ripon Mondol.
His exceptional spell of 4/24 played a pivotal role in restricting Hong Kong to 150/8 in their 20 overs, laying the foundation for Bangladesh's successful chase while Akbar Ali scored a crucial 24-ball 45 to ensure the side posted the win despite top-order troubles.

Earlier, Hong Kong's innings was anchored by Babar Hayat, who blasted a 35-ball 85, propelling his team to a competitive total. His late blitz, including five sixes in the last few overs, put pressure back on Bangladesh, as he single-handedly took Hong Kong from a precarious position to a defendable score.
Captain Nizakat Khan added 25 runs in a crucial partnership with Hayat, but regular wickets at the other end, particularly from Mondol and Mahfuzur Rahman (1/19), ensured Hong Kong couldn't capitalize fully on Hayat's onslaught.
Chasing 151, Bangladesh A started aggressively with openers Jishan Alam and Parvez Hossain Emon adding 32 runs in the first five overs. However, Ehsan Khan (3/12) pegged them back, taking key wickets including Jishan and later Towhid Hridoy (29), who was looking solid in a 54-run partnership with Akbar Ali. Akbar kept Bangladesh in the hunt with a crucial 45 off 27 balls, smashing three sixes and four boundaries to swing the momentum.
Despite losing Akbar in the 16th over, Bangladesh's lower order held their nerve. Shamim Hossain (19*) and Mahfuzur Rahman (8*) calmly completed the chase, as Bangladesh reached 151/5 in 18.2 overs, winning with 10 balls to spare. Ehsan's efforts with the ball gave Hong Kong hope, but Bangladesh's balanced batting lineup proved too strong in the end.
Ripon Mondol's bowling show contribution earned him the well-deserved Player of the Match award, setting Bangladesh A off to a winning start in the tournament. The win not only boosts Bangladesh A's chances in the competition but also highlights their depth and ability to perform under pressure. Hong Kong, despite flashes of brilliance from Babar Hayat and Ehsan Khan, will need to regroup quickly as they look to bounce back in their next fixture.
