End of an Era at Chennai Super Kings? MS Dhoni Could Bid Farewell After IPL 2026

Chennai Super Kings could be preparing for the end of an era in IPL 2026, with former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan suggesting that this season may mark MS Dhoni's final appearance in the iconic yellow jersey.

Speaking on JioHotstar's show Game Plan - Know Your Team, Pathan highlighted Dhoni's continuing influence on the franchise and explained how his presence remains central to CSK's campaign as they chase a record sixth IPL title.

MS Dhoni

Despite uncertainty around how many matches Dhoni will play, Pathan stressed that his role in the dressing room and leadership group will remain invaluable.

"CSK is incomplete without MS Dhoni. This season might be the last time we see him in the yellow jersey and it's tough to imagine CSK and the IPL without him," Pathan said.

"This season, Dhoni will play an important role in bringing everyone together. I'm not sure how many games he will play, but his presence in the dressing room will help a lot."

Pathan also added that the franchise will likely aim to give Dhoni a fitting farewell by lifting another IPL trophy.

"The CSK team management will take it step by step. Questions about his fitness, batting position, and whether he will play all games will still come up. But they will definitely look to give him a perfect farewell by lifting their sixth IPL trophy."

Sanju Samson could carry forward MS Dhoni legacy

Chennai Super Kings have strengthened their squad ahead of IPL 2026 with the addition of Sanju Samson, whose recent form in the T20 World Cup has further boosted expectations around the team.

Former India leg-spinner Piyush Chawla believes Samson's arrival could solve one of CSK's biggest issues from last season - a lack of strong starts at the top of the order.

"Sanju Samson is a match winner in himself. He proved his doubters wrong with three back-to-back impactful knocks against West Indies, England and New Zealand in the T20 World Cup," Chawla said.

"CSK will be very happy with his form because Samson has peaked right before the start of the IPL. Coming to Chennai, the way the wicket plays there will definitely suit his game."

Chawla added that Samson's aggressive approach could significantly improve CSK's powerplay performances.

"Opening the innings, his aggressive style will benefit CSK a lot. Last season they struggled to get quick starts. Only after Ayush Mhatre arrived did CSK start scoring runs in the Powerplay. Now, with Samson in, their opening problems will finally be solved."

According to Pathan, Samson's presence could also help captain Ruturaj Gaikwad manage the pressures of leading the franchise while continuing the legacy left by Dhoni.

"Sanju Samson's arrival at CSK will allow captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to express himself a bit more. It is not easy leading in the IPL while also taking forward the legacy of MS Dhoni. That is one of the toughest things to do in your career."

CSK balancing youth and experience for IPL 2026

While CSK have traditionally relied on experienced players, Pathan noted that the franchise appears to be shifting toward a younger squad while still maintaining a strong core.

Players such as Dewald Brevis, Urvil Patel, Shivam Dube and Sarfaraz Khan could play key roles as the team begins preparing for the future.

Pathan also pointed out how CSK's environment has historically helped young players develop, citing Ravindra Jadeja as an example of how the franchise nurtures talent over time.

"When you have experienced players like MS Dhoni around and someone like Stephen Fleming as coach, things become simpler for younger players," Pathan said.

"With that kind of environment in a high-pressure tournament like the IPL, players can grow quickly."

CSK will begin their IPL 2026 campaign aiming to secure a sixth title while possibly preparing to bid farewell to the captain who built the franchise's legacy.
