ENG vs AUS 4th ODI: Mitchell Starc Registers This Unwanted Record as Liam Livingstone Stars in England Win

By MyKhel Staff

Australian pace spearhead Mitchell Starc registered an unwanted record during his team's 186-run series-levelling loss to England in the fourth ODI at the Home of Cricket - Lord's in London on Friday (September 27).

Starc rewrote the record books for an unfortunate feat to his name during the fourth ODI against England when he became the bowler to deliver the most expensive over in ODI by an Aussie.

Coming in to bowl the final over of the rain-hit, 39-over-per-side match, Starc was smashed all over the park by all-rounder Liam Livingstone as he ended the over conceding a total of 28 runs.

Starc was welcomed with a six over long-on, then a maximum over deep square leg after a dot ball, a massive hit over long-off and another one over deep square leg to make it a hat-trick of sixes.

Livingstone sliced the final ball towards backward point for a four to loot a total of 28 runs from the over. This over totally ruined Starc's already ordinary figures as he gave away 70 runs without taking any wickets in his eight overs. His economy rate was 8.75 per over.

Previously, Xavier Doherty, spinner Adam Zampa and Cameron Green had given 26 runs each in an over and had the record to their names. Doherty conceded these runs against India in 2013/14.

Meanwhile Zampa and Green were smashed for 26 runs in their overs against South Africa and India respectively just last year. Here is a look at the most expensive overs delivered by Australian bowlers in ODIs:

Most runs conceded in an over in ODI by Australian players

  • 28 - Mitchell Starc vs England in 2024 (Lord's)
  • 26 - Xavier Doherty vs India in 2013 (Bengaluru)
  • 26 - Cameron Green vs India in 2023 (Indore)
  • 26 - Adam Zampa vs South Africa in 2023 (Centurion)

The most expensive over in ODI history was bowled by Netherlands' Daan van Bunge, who conceded six successive sixes in his over against South African legend Herschelle Gibbs during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007, becoming the first ODI player to give away six sixes in an over.

Van Bunge later received company from Papua New Guinea's Gaudi Toka, who conceded 36 runs in an over against USA in September 2021. With 35 runs given away in a single over, South Africa's Robin Peterson makes up the top three.

Livingstone levels Flintoff record

A final over blitz by England all-rounder Livingstone helped him tie with legendary English icon Andrew Flintoff for most sixes during an innings at Lord's in ODIs. Livingstone's knock included three fours and seven sixes.

Now, the all-rounder has tied with Flintoff, who also hit seven sixes to go along with eight fours during his knock of 123 in 129 balls against West Indies in 2004. Also, 12 sixes by England during their innings are the most by a side during an ODI at Lord's.

Coming back to the match, Livingstone (62* in 27 balls) provided some brilliant finishing touches after skipper Harry Brook and Ben Duckett laid the platform with fifties as England scored 312/5 in their 39 overs.

In response, Australia were bowled out for a paltry 126 as Matthew Potts claimed 4 wickets for 38 runs in his 8-over spell. Brydon Carse (3 for 36), Jofra Archer (2 for 33) and Adil Rashid (1 for 11) also were among the wickets for the hosts.
