By MyKhel Staff

ENG vs AUS: On the back of Travis Head's unbeaten 154 off 129 balls, Australia chased down a 316-run target in just 44 overs on Thursday, September 19. The run-chase was Australia's joint fourth-highest in ODI cricket.

The match also saw a healthy contribution from Marnus Labuschagne, who became the first player to score fifty-plus runs, take three wickets and pick four catches. The Australian batter scored unbeaten 77 off 62 as Australia took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

England deployed 28 overs of spin on the high-scoring surface at Trent Bridge in Nottingham, but could not stop Australia from registering their 13th consecutive ODI win. This is the joint second-highest streak in ODIs alongside Sri Lanka's 13 wins from June 2023 to September 2023.

England won the toss and opted to bat first in the first ODI and did well to score 315 runs in 49.4 overs. Phil Salt was dismissed for 17 by debutant Ben Dwarshuis, but his opening partner Ben Duckett played the anchor role for his team with 95 off 91.

Will Jacks came to bat at three and scored 62 off 56, while captain Harry Brook chipped in with 39 off 31. Australia were racing at 213/2 in 32.1 overs, but their innings collapsed to 288/8 and then 315 all-out once Duckett was caught and bowled by Labuchagne, who also picked the wickets of Brook, and Jofra Archer. Adam Zampa also picked three wickets, while Head also picked two wickets.

From England, pacer Jofra Archer, who was playing his first ODI in 18 months, leaked 53 runs in six overs without taking a wicket. Brydon Carse also ended up giving away 42 runs in five overs without a wicket. Spinner Liam Livingstone picked one of the three wickets but conceded 75 in nine overs. Adil Rashid also went wicketless in his 10-over spell.
