ENG vs SL 2024: Joe Root eyes multiple records in Sri Lanka Tests

ENG vs SL 2024: England international Joe Root has been a dominant force in Test cricket, a format where he truly excelled in the best way possible. As England gears up for their upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka at home, all eyes will be on Root as he has his eyes set on multiple records.

Sri Lanka's tour of England comprises three Tests, with the Test opener slated to be played on August 21 at Manchester, Old Trafford. If Root manages to accomplish it, then he will etch his name deeper into the record books for sure. Root has been in scintillating form of late, particularly in the previous series against the West Indies.

Joe Root

He finished the Test series as the leading run-getter with 291 runs, including two fifties and a century. England's Test batting great has all the tools and ingredients to break Sachin Tendulkar's record for the most runs in Test cricket.

The Master Blaster scored 15,921 runs in Tests whereas Joe Root's Test tally stands at 12,027 runs. The three-match series against Sri Lanka is just a day away from getting underway and Joe Root will be looking forward to chasing down multiple records.

1. World Test Championship (WTC) Runs Record: The 33-year-old cricketer has mustered 4,598 runs in 55 games in the World Test Championship. If he can accumulate 402 more runs, then he will become the first cricketer to reach 5,000 runs in the history of the WTC.

2. England's All-Time Leading Test Run-Scorer: It is worth mentioning here that Joe Root is closing in on Alastair Cook's record of 12,472 runs in the longest format for England. With 12,027 runs in 143 Tests, he just needs just 446 more to go past Cook to become England's all-time leading run-scorer in red-ball cricket.

3. Most Runs for England against Sri Lanka: As things stand, former England captain Alastair Cook holds the record for scoring the most runs as an England player against Sri Lanka. He has accumulated 1,290 runs in 16 Tests. On the other side of the coin, Joe Root who has scored 1,001 runs in 10 games against Sri Lanka, needs 290 more runs to go past Cook and claim this record.
