Bayliss backs Crane ahead of likely Test debut at SCG

Sydney, January 2: Mason Crane looks set to make his England Test debut on familiar territory in Sydney, after Trevor Bayliss suggested the time is right to see if the young leg-spinner is ready for the biggest stage.

Crane, who played at the SCG last year when he became New South Wales' first overseas player since 1985, was a surprise pick in England's Ashes squad but has seen his selection chances significantly boosted by the struggles of Moeen Ali.

Three-nil down with one match to play, England now look set to call on Crane as they seek a consolation victory in Sydney at the end of a challenging tour.

Asked if the 20-year-old is ready for Test cricket, Bayliss was quoted by The Guardian as saying: "There's maybe no time like the present to find out.

"We think he's a guy that has got the goods and the more he plays at this level, the better he will get.

"You have got to start somewhere.”

Bayliss also backed Moeen to enjoy further success with England. The all-rounder has endured a dismal series, picking up just three wickets at an average of 135 and contributing only 136 runs in seven innings.

"Like any player, you go through highs and lows," added Bayliss.

"At the moment the number of runs and wickets makes it one of his lows. But Mo is a free spirit and one or two shots or wickets and he will be off and running again."
