Gus Atkinson's impressive performance in the second innings helped England secure a series victory over Sri Lanka, winning by 190 runs at Lord's with a day to spare. Atkinson's maiden Test century, alongside two centuries from Joe Root, enabled England to establish a substantial 430-run lead by the end of day three. Despite Sri Lanka's efforts on Sunday, they couldn't prevent the inevitable defeat.
Dimuth Karunaratne (55), Dinesh Chandimal (58), and Dhananjaya de Silva (50) made commendable half-centuries for Sri Lanka. They managed to hold England at bay during the second session. However, Atkinson dismissed Chandimal, caught by Dan Lawrence, reducing Sri Lanka to 192-6. He quickly followed up by removing Kamindu Mendis for 4.

Milan Rathnayake contributed 43 runs off 56 balls in his second Test appearance, helping Sri Lanka bat through tea. Yet, both he and Dhananjaya fell victim to Atkinson late in the innings. This achievement made Atkinson only the third English player to score a century and take five wickets in a single Test match since Ian Botham in 1984.
Chris Woakes sealed England's victory by taking his second wicket when Lahiru Kumara skied a delivery for Olly Stone to catch. This ensured that England did not need a fifth day to complete their win. The hosts now aim for a series whitewash at The Oval, with the third Test starting next Friday.
Atkinson continued his remarkable start in Test cricket with figures of 5-62 in the second innings, removing three of Sri Lanka's top four scorers. He has taken at least two wickets in each of his first ten Test innings for England, becoming only the seventh bowler in men's Test cricket history to achieve this milestone and the first since Brett Lee in 1999.
"Honours Board addict," tweeted England Cricket on September 1, 2024, celebrating Atkinson's achievements.
