Defending Champions England will take on New Zealand in the opening match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Thursday (October 5). The two teams will lock horns at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

England won their first World Cup in 2019 on home soil and will have a huge task of defending their title in India this time. New Zealand, on the other hand, reached the Final of the grand tournament for the second time in a row but ended up on the losing side consecutive times.

England vs New Zealand Injury Update

The inaugural match of the World Cup will see these two giants of cricket lock horns at the Narendra Modi stadium, and ahead of that, there are no such injury concerns for England.

But New Zealand will miss Kane Williamson for this match. The veteran made his way into the World Cup squad but will have to sit out their opening day clash against England.

England do have a strong team available for the match against New Zealand, and they will be aiming to field their best eleven players of the pitch. The return of Ben Stokes in the ODI format, alongside Moeen Ali has definitely been a boost for them. Adil Rashid looks set to start, while Mark Wood, Reece Topley and David Willey may well be their pace trio.

New Zealand, on the other hand, have looked decent in the warm-up matches. The Kiwis do have a settled squad but Williamson's injury is a big blow. Tom Latham will be hoping to fill the gap with a replacement and Rachin Ravindra looks like a candidate who may come in for the injured Williamson. Ish Sodhi also looks set to feature for the Blackcaps.
