England vs New Zealand: Will Ben Stokes Return To Lead Three Lions For Third Test Against Kiwis?

Ben Stokes is set to return as England captain for the series-deciding third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) cleared him and Gus Atkinson of violent conduct linked to a nightclub incident earlier this month.

Atkinson has also been included in England's 15-player squad for the Nottingham Test, which starts on June 25. Their return is a major lift for England after a heavy 253-run defeat at The Kia Oval allowed New Zealand to level the three-match series 1-1.

The ECB said its disciplinary process found that "no blame" should be attached to either player for violent conduct at the nightclub. Stokes, according to the board, was not involved in any altercation and did not witness either incident.

The governing body also said Atkinson was the "victim of unprovoked attacks" and did not retaliate. The incident took place in the early hours of June 8, the day after England's 115-run win over New Zealand at Lord's in the opening Test.

Both players, however, have received written warnings for breaching contractual obligations. The ECB said they failed to meet requirements that England players maintain high standards of conduct and act in the best interests of English cricket. The pair had been made unavailable for selection for the second Test at The Oval while the disciplinary process was ongoing. Joe Root captained England in Stokes' absence, but the home side struggled badly across five days as New Zealand dominated the match.

How Will Ben Stokes' Return Matter For England?

Stokes' availability immediately changes England's balance. Without him at The Oval, England were forced into a reshuffled side that lacked depth in both batting and bowling. His all-round role gives the selectors more options, particularly if they want to restore a frontline spinner at Trent Bridge.

England omitted Shoaib Bashir for the second Test as they tried to cover Stokes' absence and Ollie Robinson's knee issue. That left the attack looking thin when New Zealand's batters took control. Part-time spin from Jacob Bethell brought four wickets, but it also highlighted the lack of a specialist option.

Atkinson's return is equally important. He had taken a five-wicket haul in the Lord's victory and has quickly become a central part of England's pace plans. His ability to hit the pitch hard and sustain pressure should be valuable at Trent Bridge, where seam movement can remain in play for long spells.

Stokes and Atkinson both played county cricket during the week before being withdrawn from the final two days of their matches. Stokes made 95 from 118 balls for Durham against Northamptonshire, while Atkinson took four wickets for Surrey against Glamorgan.

England squad for Trent Bridge Test

England have named a 15-player squad for the third Test: Ben Stokes, Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Matthew Fisher, Emilio Gay, Ollie Robinson, Joe Root, Jamie Smith and Josh Tongue.

Wicketkeeper Jamie Smith is back in the squad after missing the second Test on paternity leave following the birth of his second child. Robinson has also been included after sitting out at The Oval with a knee injury, though England will assess his fitness before finalising the XI.

There are omissions too. James Rew and Sonny Baker, who both debuted at The Oval during a disrupted build-up, have been left out. Rew had a difficult match behind the stumps and made 24 and 15 with the bat. Baker finished with match figures of 3-161 from 34.1 overs.

Jordan Cox, another debutant in London, remains in the squad after scores of 27 and 25. Matthew Fisher, who played only his second Test at The Oval and claimed five wickets, has also retained his place.

Selection Calls Ahead Of The Decider

England could return close to the XI that won at Lord's if Robinson is passed fit. That would likely bring Stokes and Atkinson back into the side and reopen the door for Bashir, whose absence was debated during the Oval defeat.

Jofra Archer's workload will also come under scrutiny. He played at The Oval in his first red-ball appearance since the Ashes series over the winter, having missed the first Test against New Zealand after an IPL stint. England may weigh whether to use him again immediately.

Rehan Ahmed provides another spin-bowling option if England want more variety. The presence of Bethell, Bashir and Rehan gives the management different routes depending on conditions and the fitness of the pace group.

The wider issue for England is control. Their Lord's win was built on a stronger, more rounded attack. At The Oval, the absence of senior options exposed inexperienced players in a high-pressure Test. New Zealand took full advantage and now arrive in Nottingham with the series alive.

For Stokes, the third Test offers a quick return to cricketing matters after a turbulent fortnight. England have accepted the disciplinary breach was serious enough for written warnings, but the clearance on violent conduct allows the captain and Atkinson to resume their roles in a match that will decide the series.
