England vs NZ Test: Alastair Cook set to eclipse Gooch as England's highest scorer

Headingley, May 29: Although Shivnarine Chanderpaul seems to have lost the opportunity to overtake Brian Lara to become West Indies' highest scorer in Tests, but for England captain Alastair Cook, the pride to become England's highest scorer in the longest format of the game is not far. The 30-year-old left-hander needs just 32 runs to take it over from his mentor Graham Gooch. Cook has 8869 runs from 113 Tests at the moment as against Gooch's 8900 from 118 Tests. The former, however, has seven centuries more than Gooch's 20.

Cook will get the opportunity to better Gooch's record during the second Investec Test against New Zealand starting here on Friday.

A humble Cook, however, said he was nowhere near Gooch's class though he would relish the moment. He admitted that Gooch's advice helped him improve his game.

The England captain hit a priceless 162 against the Kiwis in the first Test at the Lord's to help his team crush the visitors by 124 runs and get a 1-0 lead in the 2-Test series. [England beat NZ by 124 runs in 1st Test at Lord's]

A few weeks ago, Jimmy Anderson bettered Ian Botham's record of 383 Test wickets during a series against the West Indies. It means two of England's biggest cricketers saw their personal milestones being overhauled within a span of a few weeks.
