EPL: The Premier League is set to take a major step forward in officiating accuracy with the introduction of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT), which will be implemented for the first time in matches on April 12.
This cutting-edge system was trialed in English football during the FA Cup fifth round in March before undergoing further testing in the Premier League. After successful evaluations, it has now been given the green light for full deployment.

SAOT is designed to make offside decisions more precise by automating key aspects of the process. The technology uses optical tracking and virtual offside lines to assist match officials, reducing the margin for human error while improving consistency. It has already been successfully implemented in competitions such as the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the UEFA Champions League, Serie A, and La Liga.
The Premier League, in a statement, emphasized the advantages of the new system, stating that it will enhance the speed and accuracy of decision-making while also improving the experience for fans, both in stadiums and watching at home. The technology generates real-time virtual graphics to make decisions clearer for broadcasters and supporters.
Equipped with 30 cameras installed around each stadium, SAOT will track player movements and detect offsides with greater precision. The VAR team will verify the automated process before the final decision is communicated to the on-field referee.
Developed in collaboration with Professional Game Match Officials Ltd and Genius Sports, this system will debut in the Premier League when Manchester City hosts Crystal Palace in the early kick-off on April 12. Other fixtures that day, including Arsenal vs. Brentford, will also feature the technology.
