Everything You Need to Know About Sakib Hussain: The Bihar Pacer Who Took 4 Wickets on IPL Debut

Sunrisers Hyderabad's latest victory over Rajasthan Royals was powered by a name few fans knew before Monday - Sakib Hussain, a 21-year-old pacer from Bihar who delivered one of the most memorable debuts in IPL history.

Making his IPL debut in Hyderabad, the young right-arm pacer returned figures of 4 for 24, dismantling Rajasthan Royals' batting line-up and helping SRH secure a dominant 57-run victory. Partnering fellow debutant Praful Hinge, who also claimed four wickets, Sakib turned what was expected to be a high-scoring contest into a statement bowling performance.

A debut that placed Sakib among IPL greats

Sakib's performance immediately placed him in elite company. He became the seventh player in IPL history to take four or more wickets on debut and now shares the joint fifth-best bowling figures on debut.

He joins a distinguished list that includes names such as Shoaib Akhtar, whose 4/11 for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2008 remains one of the most iconic debut spells in IPL history.

Best bowling figures on IPL debut:

  • Alzarri Joseph - 6/12 (2019)
  • Andrew Tye - 5/17 (2017)
  • Shoaib Akhtar - 4/11 (2008)
  • Kevon Cooper - 4/26 (2012)
  • Ashwani Kumar - 4/24 (2025)
  • Sakib Hussain - 4/24 (2026)
  • David Wiese - 4/33 (2015)
  • Praful Hinge - 4/34 (2026)

Among Indian players, Sakib also joined a select list of uncapped bowlers to claim a four-wicket haul in their maiden IPL spell.

From Bihar cricket to IPL spotlight

Sakib Hussain's journey to the IPL has been steadily tracked by scouts over the past few years. Hailing from Gopalganj in Bihar, he made his domestic T20 debut for Bihar during the **2022-23 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy** at just 17 years of age.

He quickly showed promise, registering figures of 4 for 20 in only his second match - an early glimpse of his wicket-taking potential.

His breakthrough moment in red-ball cricket came during the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy, where he picked up 6 for 41 against Arunachal Pradesh, marking his first five-wicket haul at senior level.

Despite being signed by Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2024 season, he did not feature in a match and was released before the following auction.

That changed when Sunrisers Hyderabad secured him for ₹30 lakh at the IPL 2026 auction - a decision that paid off immediately.

Dream debut moment for the young pacer

After the match, Sakib reflected on the emotional moment of making an impact in his very first IPL appearance.

"Thank you so much. Every player hopes for a debut like this, so it feels really good. I'm very happy. (when did he know he was going to play?) The bowling coach Varun bhai informed me a day before the game that I would be playing," Hussain said in the post-match presentation ceremony.

A new pace prospect to watch

With his fearless spell against a strong Rajasthan Royals line-up, Sakib Hussain has announced himself as one of the emerging fast-bowling prospects in IPL 2026.

For Sunrisers Hyderabad, his debut performance not only secured a crucial victory but also revealed a new weapon in their bowling attack - one capable of shaping matches under pressure.

If his first appearance is any indication, Sakib Hussain's rise from Bihar cricket to the IPL spotlight may only be getting started.
