Ex New Zealand Cricketer Tom Bruce Switches Allegiance to Scotland, Set to Boost World Cup League 2 Campaign in Canada

Former New Zealand batsman Tom Bruce has officially pledged his international future to Scotland and will join their squad for the upcoming ICC Men's Cricket World Cup League 2 series in Canada later this month.

The 34-year-old right-handed batter, who played 17 T20Is for the Black Caps between 2017 and 2020, qualifies to represent Scotland through his father, who was born in Edinburgh.

Bruce's ties with Scottish cricket date back nearly ten years. In 2016, he appeared for Scotland's Development XI and made an unbeaten 132 against Durham Academy. However, ICC eligibility rules at the time barred him from playing at the full international level. Now fully qualified, Bruce brings a wealth of experience and talent to the Scottish side.

A standout player in New Zealand's domestic cricket, Bruce has amassed over 6,200 first-class runs at an impressive average of 47.12. Among his 11 centuries is a massive 345 scored in the 2024-25 Plunket Shield, which ranks as the third-highest individual score in New Zealand first-class cricket history. Additionally, Bruce has been a force in T20 cricket, accumulating more than 2,500 runs for Central Districts Stags with a strike rate exceeding 140, including 18 half-centuries.

Cricket Scotland's Head of Performance, Steve Snell, welcomed Bruce's addition to the squad, saying, "We're excited to welcome Tom Bruce into the squad for the first time. He has had a very successful career in New Zealand cricket, but he is proud of his Scottish heritage, and we've been in conversations with him for some time about committing to playing for Scotland. He's excited to get involved and sees a huge level of opportunity for both him and the team moving forward."

Scotland currently sit third in the ICC League 2 table, engaged in a close contest with Canada and Namibia. Bruce's arrival is timely, offering vital experience and stability as Scotland push to strengthen their position in the World Cup qualification race and improve their standing in the competition.
