Exclusive: 'I will absolutely welcome this' - Ex-Bengal player Subhomoy Das hails BCCI decision to split up Ranji Trophy

Former Bengal player and CAB selector Subhomoy Das appreciates the thought process of BCCI to break the Ranji Trophy into two halves.

There is a confirmation of a two-halved Ranji Trophy tournament from the upcoming season.

Ranji Trophy

Currently, all the teams start their domestic season with Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. Only after that, the Ranji Trophy takes place. But from the upcoming season, the Duleep Trophy will commence the season, followed by Irani Trophy. Then the Ranji Trophy will start and teams will play 5 first-class matches before a break and the Mushtaq Ali and Vijay Hazare affairs will be slotted in this time. After that, the final two rounds of Ranji matches and the knockout fixtures will take place.

This has been done to lessen the workload of players as a continuous Ranji Trophy creates fixture congestion.

Alongside this, former Bengal cricketer Subhomoy Das believes it will be of great benefit to the growth of domestic players if BCCI ensures international players participate for their respective states in the 2nd phase of the tournament.

"There is always a thought process behind this. If our international stars play in the second half of the Ranji Trophy, I will absolutely welcome this. Many domestic players never get a chance to play alongside an international player or against them in their career. It causes a hindrance in the understanding of their capability. I think BCCI is taking this step for that scenario as well," Subhmoy Das told MyKhel in an Exclusive Chat.

It is still unclear whether top international stars will participate or not in the Ranji Trophies, but if that materializes, domestic cricket will receive a major boost. In that case, the Indian international window will also have a tweak as generally the national team is involved during January or February, when the potential 2nd half of Ranji Trophy will be taking place.
