Explained: Why Alzarri Joseph Was Reprimanded by ICC?

By MyKhel Staff

West Indies fast bowler Alzarri Joseph found himself on the wrong side of cricket's governing body during the first ODI against Bangladesh in St. Kitts and Nevis. The International Cricket Council (ICC) fined Joseph 25% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

The specific violation was tied to Article 2.3, which prohibits the use of "audible obscenities" during a match. The incident unfolded even before the game began. Reports indicate that Joseph engaged in an exchange with the fourth umpire after being instructed not to step onto the pitch with spikes on.

In response, Joseph reportedly used offensive and abusive language, resulting in the breach. As part of the punishment, he also received one demerit point, marking his second infraction within a 24-month period. The charge was brought forth by a panel of umpires, including on-field officials Kumar Dharmasena and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Asif Yaqoob, and fourth umpire Gregory Brathwaite. Match referee Jeff Crowe presided over the case, and Joseph accepted the sanction without contest, avoiding a formal hearing.

Level 1 breaches under the ICC Code of Conduct are the least severe but carry clear consequences, including fines up to 50% of the match fee and the addition of one or two demerit points. This regulatory framework underscores the ICC's commitment to maintaining discipline and professionalism on the field.

Despite this disciplinary hiccup, Joseph's team celebrated a much-needed victory, snapping an 11-match losing streak against Bangladesh. The West Indies secured a five-wicket win, successfully chasing a target of 295 runs with 14 balls to spare. Sherfane Rutherford emerged as the hero of the match, smashing a maiden ODI century off just 80 balls. His blistering 113-run knock, laced with seven boundaries and eight towering sixes, rescued the team from a challenging position.

Joseph's reprimand serves as a reminder of the fine line between passion and conduct in professional sports. While the West Indies team revels in their series lead, Joseph will aim to turn the page quickly and contribute positively to his team's efforts in the upcoming matches. The focus now shifts to the second ODI, where the pacer has the opportunity to make headlines for his performance rather than off-field controversies.
