Explained: Why Rohit Sharma Fitness Became a Political Debate Just Before India vs Australia Clash?

By MyKhel Staff

The controversy over Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s remarks about Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma’s fitness has taken a political turn, drawing strong reactions from Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and opposition leaders.

The debate erupted on Monday (March 3), just a day before India’s crucial semifinal clash against Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Let's dive into the details:

Rohit Sharma fat shame controversy explained

How the Controversy Started

The controversy began with a now-deleted tweet by Shama Mohamed, where she questioned Rohit Sharma’s fitness and criticized his leadership. She posted on X:

"@ImRo45 is fat for a sportsman! Need to lose weight! And of course, the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had!"

Her remarks quickly went viral, triggering backlash from cricket fans and politicians alike. Many accused her of body-shaming the Indian captain and disrespecting his contributions to the sport.

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya Condemns the Remarks

Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya strongly criticized Shama Mohamed’s comments, urging political leaders to refrain from interfering in the lives of sportspersons. He took to X and wrote:

"Congress and TMC should leave sportspersons alone as they are fully capable of handling their professional lives. Remarks made by leaders from these parties, indulging in body shaming and questioning an athlete's place in the team, are not only deeply shameful but also outright pathetic. Such comments undermine the hard work and sacrifices that our sportspersons make to represent the country on the global stage."

Shama Mohamed Defends Herself

As the backlash intensified, Shama Mohamed defended her comments, claiming that they were not intended as body-shaming but rather as a concern about an athlete’s fitness. Speaking to ANI, she said: "It was not body-shaming. I always believed a sportsperson should be fit, and I felt he was a bit overweight, so I just tweeted about that. I have been attacked for no reason. When I compared him with previous captains, I put in a statement. I have the right. What is wrong in saying that? It is a democracy."

Despite her defense, the Congress party distanced itself from her remarks. Party spokesperson Pawan Khera clarified that her statements did not reflect the party’s official stance and directed her to delete the posts.

"Dr. Shama Mohammed, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party's position," tweeted Pawan Khera. "She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future. The Indian National Congress holds the contributions of sporting icons in the highest regard and does not endorse any statements that undermine their legacy."

"Dr. Shama Mohamed, National Spokesperson of the Indian National Congress, made certain remarks about a cricketing legend that do not reflect the party's position. She has been asked to delete the concerned social media posts from X and has been advised to exercise greater caution in the future," Khera stated.

He further emphasized that Congress respects India’s sporting icons and does not endorse statements that undermine their achievements.

TMC’s Saugata Roy Adds to the Controversy

While Congress distanced itself from the controversy, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Saugata Roy supported Shama Mohamed’s views, adding another layer to the political drama.

Roy went a step further by questioning Rohit Sharma’s place in the Indian team. Speaking to ANI, he said: "This is not about politics, this is about cricket. Scoring a century once in two years and getting out quickly in other matches doesn’t justify his place in the team. The Congress leader is correct in saying this. Yes, he is overweight, but people don’t seem to care."

Roy also suggested that India had fitter and more capable players who could lead the team, naming Jasprit Bumrah and Shreyas Iyer as potential captaincy options.

"If we talk about a fit and capable captain, there are many new players performing well. If fitness is the issue, someone like Bumrah, if he were fit, could be a great captain. Even Shreyas Iyer could be a potential captain. But Rohit Sharma should not have a place in the team," he added.

BCCI’s Response and Rohit Sharma’s Fitness Concerns

The controversy over Rohit Sharma’s fitness has sparked wider discussions, especially with India preparing for a crucial semifinal against Australia in Dubai. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also responded to the remarks, assuring that Rohit is fit and ready for the match.

A senior BCCI official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: "Rohit Sharma has cleared all fitness tests required by the BCCI and has been leading the team from the front. We have no concerns over his physical condition, and such baseless remarks are unwarranted."

As India gears up for a high-stakes encounter against Australia, the political controversy surrounding Rohit Sharma has overshadowed discussions about the match. While the Congress has distanced itself from Shama Mohamed’s comments, TMC’s Saugata Roy’s statements have further fueled the debate.

For now, the focus remains on India’s semifinal clash, with Rohit Sharma having the perfect opportunity to silence critics with a strong performance on the field.
