Chennai Super Kings have lost their captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, who suffered an elbow injury and is now ruled out of the IPL 2025.
It has come as a big blow for CSK, who have now resorted to MS Dhoni to lead the team for the rest of the season.

Gaikwad has been the most prolific batter for the franchise over the last few years. Amid a disastrous season, losing Gaikwad is a major blow for the franchise. Although it is not yet confirmed, but CSK are in search for a replacement and are likely to rope one player in for the rest of the IPL 2025 season.
With Ruturaj Gaikwad facing a spell on the sidelines due to injury, rumours have begun swirling about a potential reunion between Chennai Super Kings and their former middle-order stalwart Ambati Rayudu. The former India player is currently working as a commentator but on social media, fans have started to raise speculations. Rayudu played for Chennai Super Kings and was part of their IPL 2022 winning squad as well.
Ambati Rayudu's admiration for CSK and particularly for MS Dhoni is no secret. Over the years, he has openly expressed his deep respect for the former India and CSK captain, calling himself a "Thala fan" and reiterating his emotional bond with the franchise. His passionate support for CSK has continued even after his playing days, often seen publicly backing the team and its players.
In the ongoing IPL 2025 season, Rayudu has often voiced his love for the franchise and Dhoni. Although the player has often been the cause of immense trolling from fans and other pundits, Rayudu has remained firm in his love for Dhoni and recently took to social media to confirm his allegiance despite the humours.
While the idea of Rayudu donning the yellow jersey once more may excite fans, it is important to separate speculation from reality. Fans on social media may have created a buzz, but the reality is far from the current notions. Some CSK fans have also been asking if there is any validity of Rayudu joining as a player for the five-time IPL champions. And the verdict to their enquiry is a NO...
Despite the emotional connect, there is no possibility of Rayudu returning to play for CSK this season. He announced his retirement from all forms of Indian cricket in May 2023, right after playing the IPL final. At the time, he made it clear that his decision was final and there would be no comebacks.
Moreover, Rayudu did not register for the IPL 2025 auction. According to league regulations, only players who are either retained, traded, or picked at the auction are eligible to play in the tournament. As such, even if CSK wanted to bring him back, there is no legal route to do so within this season.
While the idea of Ambati Rayudu rejoining CSK in the wake of Ruturaj Gaikwad's injury might spark nostalgia and emotion, it holds no practical or regulatory ground. Rayudu remains a cherished part of the franchise's history, but his role going forward is limited to that of a supporter, not a player.
