Fakhar Zaman Handed Fine and Demerit Point by ICC for Code of Conduct Breach

Pakistan batter Fakhar Zaman has been penalised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following a disciplinary breach during the Tri-Series final against Sri Lanka on 29 November. The left-hander has been fined 10 percent of his match fee after being found guilty of violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

According to the ICC, Zaman breached Article 2.8 of the Code, which addresses actions deemed as "showing dissent at an umpire's decision during an international match." The incident in question took place in the 19th over of Pakistan's innings, where Zaman reacted aggressively and engaged in a prolonged exchange with the on-field umpires after being ruled out.

Along with the fine, one demerit point has been added to Zaman's disciplinary record - his first such offence within the last 24 months. The ICC confirmed that the Pakistan batter admitted the charge and accepted the punishment without contest, eliminating the need for a formal hearing.

The charge was filed by the match officials present during the final - on-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Asif Yaqoob, third umpire Rashid Riaz, and fourth umpire Faisal Afridi. The sanction was imposed by Reon King from the Emirates ICC International Panel of Match Referees.

Under ICC regulations, Level 1 breaches are considered the mildest category of disciplinary offences. Punishments can range from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50 percent of a player's match fee, along with one or two demerit points.

While this incident does not result in immediate suspension, accumulating demerit points can lead to more severe consequences. A total of four or more demerit points within a 24-month span converts into suspension points, resulting in a ban - equivalent to either one Test or two limited-overs internationals, whichever appears first on the player's schedule.

The ICC clarified that demerit points remain active on a player's record for two years. After that period, they are automatically cleared.

While Zaman's dismissal sparked controversy on the field, the swift acceptance of the sanction brings closure to the disciplinary matter - but also puts the batter on caution for upcoming fixtures.
