Fanny Utagushimaninde Of Rwanda Rewrites History Books By Becoming Youngest Centurion In Women’s T20I

Rwanda's Fanny Utagushimaninde has rewritten the history books of women's cricket, becoming the first woman to score a hundred on T20I debut. She smashed 111 not out off 65 balls against Ghana in Lagos, Nigeria, during the Invitational Women's T20I Tournament.

Debuting at the age of 15 years and 223 days, she was also the youngest to score a hundred in women's T20Is.

What Was The Previous Record For Highest Runs On T20I Debut?

Before the current milestone, the record for the highest individual score by a woman on T20I debut was held by Karen Rolton. The former Australian captain scored an unbeaten 96 against the England women's cricket team in Taunton back in 2005, during only the second-ever women's T20I match.

Meanwhile, the record for the youngest centurion in women's T20Is previously belonged to Prosscovia Alako, who smashed 116 against the Mali women's cricket team in Kigali in 2019 at the age of just 16 years and 233 days.

In men's cricket, four batters have scored a hundred on T20I debut, but none from a Full Member team. Canada's Matthew Spoors leads the way with 108 not out against Philippines in 2022. France's Gustav Mckeon is the youngest man to score a T20I hundred at the age of 18 years and 280 days.

Rwanda vs Ghana Match

Rwanda delivered a dominant all-round performance to secure a comprehensive 122-run victory over Ghana. Batting first, Rwanda posted an imposing total of 210 for 3 in their 20 overs, powered by a brilliant century from Utagushimaninde.

She anchored the innings brilliantly, while Merveille Uwase provided late acceleration with an unbeaten 32 off just 19 deliveries. Notably, Rwanda also benefited from 28 extras, including a staggering 25 wides, which boosted their total significantly.

In reply, Ghana struggled to build momentum against a disciplined Rwandan bowling attack and could only manage 88 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. The chasing side never looked in contention as wickets fell at regular intervals, sealing a convincing win for Rwanda.
