Fans pick India's 'Greatest Test XI' ahead of 500th match in Kanpur

Bengaluru, Sep 20: Ahead of India's 500th Test, the country's "Greatest Test XI" has been unveiled, by the fans, on Cricket Australia's (CA) website, today (September 20).

India will play their 500th Test, against New Zealand, in Kanpur from Thursday (September 22). To mark this momentous occasion, CA invited fans to pick India's "Greatest Test XI".

Sachin Tendulkar has won his number 4 spot

"The votes are in - this is India's Greatest Test XI as voted by YOU! Over the past week, we have been asking you to have your say on who you think deserves to be selected in India's Greatest XI as a way of celebrating their 500th Test match, starting on Thursday in Kanpur," CA announced on its website on Tuesday.

According to the portal, more than 50,000 votes were cast with Mahendra Singh Dhoni garnering the highest percentage among all players. He tallied 93 per cent of votes against others in wicketkepeer category, which included Syed Kirmani and Kiran More, for the number 7 spot.

Sunil Gavaskar and Virender Sehwag were chosen as the openers with Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar following them. VVS Laxman was at number 5 while Sourav Ganguly won the number 6 position, edging out current captain Virat Kohli.

Kapil Dev and Zaheer Khan were the fast bowlers while the spinners who got the nod were Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh.

Note: Voting for opening slot was as a pair, Gavaskar-Sehwag combination received 63% of votes. Sehwag-Gambhir was 2nd at 30%
