When Punjab Kings put up a mammoth 245/6 on the scoreboard, thanks to Shreyas Iyer's explosive 82 off 36 balls, few would have bet on the hosts pulling off the highest successful chase of the season. However, Abhishek Sharma, in tandem with Travis Head, made a mockery of the total with a power-packed onslaught that dismantled the Kings' bowling attack.
The carnage began early. Sunrisers hit the 100-run mark inside the eighth over - a sign of the fireworks to come. Abhishek, who reached his fifty in just 19 deliveries, shifted gears seamlessly, targeting every bowler with ruthless precision. He hammered 10 sixes and numerous boundaries, making light work of a target that should have tested the very best.
Lockie Ferguson's injury, lack of penetration from the spinners, and poor fielding further allowed Abhishek to dominate. Even Yuzvendra Chahal - known for breakthroughs - couldn't find a way past him. A dropped return catch from Chahal summed up Punjab's misery on the night. Abhishek capitalized immediately, slamming a six and a four to continue the assault.
Abhishek's century arrived in the 13th over, with a single that drew wild applause. It wasn't just about the speed of the ton but the context - chasing 246 in a must-win game, with SRH's top order under scrutiny, and the team languishing at the bottom of the table. The hundred became a defining statement - a performance etched into IPL's storied history.
He eventually fell for 141 off 54 balls - the highest score by an Indian batter in the tournament - but by then, the damage was long done. Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan Kishan applied finishing touches, completing the chase with nine balls to spare.
Shreyas Iyer summed it up aptly after the match, calling Abhishek's innings "one of the best" he had ever witnessed. While the loss was bitter for Punjab, the neutral fans were treated to one of the most entertaining chases ever witnessed in T20 cricket.
With this century, Abhishek joins an iconic list of IPL fastest hundreds, sitting just behind the likes of Yusuf Pathan and David Miller. More significantly, it signals his emergence as a potential game-changer - not just for SRH, but for Indian cricket's future T20 plans. On a night where 491 runs were scored, it was one man's breathtaking knock that stole the spotlight.
