Foreign Players May Be Given Freedom to Decide Return as IPL 2025 Eyes Resumption: Report

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 gearing up for a possible restart later this week, franchises are reportedly considering giving their overseas players the liberty to decide whether they want to return for the remainder of the tournament.

This development comes in the wake of a ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan, following a week of heightened military tensions that led to the temporary suspension of the league.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had put the tournament on hold last Friday as a precautionary measure after the escalation of cross-border unrest. Since then, there has been no official word from the board regarding the exact timeline of the competition's resumption.

Franchise officials have indicated that, given the sensitive circumstances, they will not compel their overseas contingent to return.

"We will not push anyone and will leave it to them. Yes, this is a force majeure, an unforeseen event which is beyond anyone's control," a team CEO told RevSportz.

The clause of force majeure-a legal provision used in contracts-essentially waives obligations in the event of extraordinary occurrences. It renders a recent BCCI rule redundant, one which stipulated that any player pulling out after being picked in the auction would face a two-season ban.

As of Sunday, May 11, franchises remained in a holding pattern, awaiting formal communication from BCCI. A key meeting between board officials and members of the central government is expected on Monday, where discussions will likely center around finalising the dates and venues for the league's return.

BCCI, according to reports, is aiming to complete the tournament within this month. The league still has 16 matches left, including the playoffs, and the governing body is keen not to stretch beyond May.

Meanwhile, team officials have not yet reached out to their foreign recruits. "It depends on the clarity we get. Once we have fixed dates, we'll speak to our players abroad," a franchise source said.

Most foreign players, despite initial concerns, are understood to be open to returning, provided the situation continues to stabilise and the revised schedule is clearly communicated.

As the wait continues, stakeholders across the league remain optimistic that the remainder of IPL 2025 will be played safely and smoothly.
