From India Spinner to Selector: Pragyan Ojha’s New BCCI Role

Pragyan Ojha is set to take charge as the interim chairman of the BCCI's senior men's selection committee, succeeding Ajit Agarkar as his tenure as chief selector approaches its conclusion.

Ojha, a former India international and left-arm spinner, is expected to assume the interim role as the Board of Control for Cricket in India prepares for a change in the leadership of the senior selection panel. Agarkar's current tenure is scheduled to conclude on October 4, according to reports.

The development marks a new phase in Ojha's post-playing career, having moved from international cricket into broadcasting, cricket administration and, now, national selection.

Why is Pragyan Ojha becoming interim chief selector?

The BCCI's senior selection committee is entering a period of transition with Agarkar's tenure drawing to a close.

According to reports, a selection committee meeting was held in Guwahati with Agarkar absent, prompting the board to put an interim arrangement in place. Ojha, understood to be the senior-most member of the existing four-member selection panel based on Test appearances, is set to take charge of the committee's proceedings.

His appointment is currently being described as interim, meaning the longer-term leadership of the selection panel remains to be decided by the BCCI.

Reports have also linked former India wicketkeeper-batter Parthiv Patel with the permanent chief selector's position, although no long-term appointment has been confirmed in the material available.

Pragyan Ojha's international career

Ojha represented India across all three formats during his international career.

He played 24 Tests, 18 ODIs and six T20Is, taking 144 wickets across the three formats. His Test career was particularly productive, with the spinner claiming 113 wickets at an average of around 30.

Ojha's Test record includes seven five-wicket hauls, with his best figures of 6/47.

His final international appearance came in November 2013, during Sachin Tendulkar's farewell Test against the West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium.

It proved to be a memorable farewell for Ojha as well. He took 10 wickets in the match and was named Player of the Match as India completed a 2-0 series victory.

From Deccan Chargers to Mumbai Indians

Ojha also enjoyed a significant IPL career.

He represented the Deccan Chargers and was part of the franchise's title-winning campaign in 2009. The following year, he claimed the IPL Purple Cap after finishing the 2010 season as the tournament's leading wicket-taker.

Ojha later joined Mumbai Indians and was part of the franchise during its successful period in the competition.

His professional playing career eventually moved towards its conclusion, with his last first-class appearance coming in 2018 in Dehradun. He formally retired from professional cricket in 2020.

What comes next for the Indian selection committee?

Ojha's immediate responsibility will be to oversee the selection process while the BCCI determines its permanent leadership structure.

The timing comes with a busy period ahead for Indian cricket. The senior men's team is currently involved in a three-match ODI series against the West Indies, with the final match scheduled for Saturday.

India are then scheduled to travel to New Zealand, where the senior team is set to play five T20Is, five ODIs and two Tests between October 22 and November 27.

The selection committee will therefore have several squads and player combinations to consider over the coming weeks, making the transition in leadership particularly significant for the administration of the national team.

For Ojha, the interim appointment represents a notable progression from his playing career. The spinner who finished his international career with a 10-wicket haul in Tendulkar's farewell Test is now set to have a role in determining the next generation of India's international cricketers.

The immediate question, however, is how long that role will last. The BCCI is yet to establish its permanent successor to Agarkar, leaving Ojha to oversee the selection committee during the transition.
