Once a net bowler for MS Dhoni, Irfan Umair scripted a thrilling chapter in his career last night, guiding Falcon Risers Hyderabad to a dramatic victory in the Indian Street Premier League (ISPL).
The costliest player of his team and a renowned death-over specialist, Irfan showcased nerves of steel, conceding just three runs in the final over to secure a crucial win. His brilliant spell of 2 overs, 2 wickets for 12 runs earned him the prestigious Gully to Glory Award, marking Falcon Risers' third victory of the season.

Hailing from Ranchi, Jharkhand, MS Dhoni's hometown, Irfan's journey has been nothing short of inspirational. Battling financial hardships, he lived at train stations upon moving to Mumbai, taking up odd jobs, including waiting tables and working as a sushi chef, to sustain his cricketing dreams. His talent earned him a place at MIG Cricket Club and later a spot in the probables list for the Ranji and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophies. However, it was during the lockdown that he turned to tennis-ball cricket for financial stability, refining his death-over skills and catching the attention of selectors.
Despite missing ISPL Season 1, Irfan made an emphatic entry in Season 2, securing a ₹16.5 lakh contract. His discovery came through Falcon Risers Hyderabad's Assistant Coach, Vishal Kalyankar, who spotted him at the Delhi Dhamaka Tournament. The franchise, known for unearthing raw tennis-ball talent, once again struck gold with Irfan.
"I am known as a death-over specialist in my team, and my strength remains the same. I thank my owners, my team, and the entire performance staff for placing their trust in me. I'm grateful for the opportunity and will continue to give my best in the upcoming matches. As a team, we don't focus on individual performances but on winning together and carrying that momentum forward. Lastly, thanks to my family for their support," Irfan said in an interview recently.
A player who once bowled at MS Dhoni in practice sessions, Irfan now dreams of cementing his place in professional cricket, proving that perseverance and determination always lead to success.
