From tormenting England to thumping Australia: Five times when India recorded five largest Test wins by runs

Team India have well and truly dominated Test cricket over the decades and their performances in the purest format has been nothing short of remarkable. They were the runners-up of the ICC World Test Championships in the first two editions.

New Zealand and Australia were the two teams that defeated India in WTC 2019 and 2023 finals respectively. However, this time around, the current WTC table toppers will make sure that they tick all the boxes so much that they can claim the historic title.

India

Cut to the chase, the Indian team have quite often churned out crushing wins against some of the toughest opponents. When it comes to winning by huge margins, the Indians have established a pattern of dismantling their opponents not just through brilliance but by leaving an undeniable mark. Let's take a look at India's largest wins by runs in Test cricket.

1. India vs England - 434 Runs (Feb 2024, Rajkot): India's largest win by runs came against England in Rajkot earlier this year. The Indians crushed England by a colossal margin of 434 runs. Setting a target of 557, India left England’s batting order helpless, courtesy of terrific bowling spells from Ravindra Jadeja (7 wickets) and Mohammed Siraj (5 wickets). Jadeja also led the batting attack by example with an impactful century and was named the Man of the Match for his all-round performance.

2. India vs New Zealand - 372 Runs (Dec 2021, Wankhede): India's second largest win in terms of runs came against New Zealand as they won the game by 372 runs at Wankhede. Team India posted a formidable target of 540, thanks to Mayank Agarwal's 150 and 62 in the first and second innings. On the other hand, Ravichandran Ashwin wreaked havoc as he took four wickets in the first innings and followed it up with another four in the second innings. A top team like New Zealand failed to handle the pressure of a massive fourth-innings chase before they fell prey to India.

3. India vs South Africa - 337 Runs (Dec 2015, Delhi): India got the better of South Africa by 337 runs to register their third-biggest win by runs in the longest format. Team India set up a target of 418 for Proteas, thanks to Ajinkya Rahane who scored 127 and 100* in the first and second innings. In reply, South Africa were beaten by 337 runs as they were overwhelmed by Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin's bowling masterclass as the spin duo took 7 wickets apiece.

4. India vs. New Zealand - 321 Runs (Oct 2016, Indore): Team India registered another huge win against New Zealand eight years ago in the cleanest city. The hosts set a target of 475 and then steamrolled New Zealand by 321 runs. Ravichandran Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers for India as he bowled with precision to dismantle New Zealand’s batting on a turning track. He produced a match-winning bowling spell by accounting for six dismissals in the first innings and followed it up with seven wickets in the second innings.

5. India vs Australia - 320 Runs (Oct 2008, Mohali): India have recorded many memorable Test wins against Australia in their history and their Mohali win against them was truly one of the special ones. It was at that time, India gave the Aussies a run for their money by setting up a mammoth target of 516. India showed an elite mentality against a tough opponent by crushing them by 320 runs. MS Dhoni was named the Man of the Match for leading the attack by example, thanks to his 92 and 68* in the first and second innings.
