Ganguly practises at Eden on his 36th birthday

By Staff

Kolkata, Jul 8 (UNI) Sourav Ganguly today spent most of his time with willow and leather, braving inclement weather at Eden Gardens to celebrate his 36th birthday.

He jogged, ran and spent at gym at Eden and it was no denying the fact that he was serious about his performance in the upcoming Test series in Sri-Lanka beginning July 23.

Earlier at his home in Behala, the former Team India captain refused to comment on India's defeat against Sri-Lanka in Asia Cup in Pakistan, saying he was not in the ODI squad.

Scores of fans and scribes had gathered at his south Kolkata residence to wish him a happy return of the day on his 36th birth day.

On this day the BCCI picked him up in the 16-man squad for three Test series in Sri-Lanka commencing July 23 and ignored him in the 30 probables for Champions Trophy, scheduled to be played in Pakistan in September this year.

Ganguly's exclusion in the 30 probables shocked former selector Sambaran Banerjee.

Reacting to BCCI selection Banerjee said it was surprising that two former captains Ganguly and Rahul Dravid did not figure in the list.

He wondered how experienced hands like Ganguly and Dravid were not named despite their impressive performances in recent times.

Banerjee said the Champions Trophy was considered as mini World Cup, but experienced hands were neglected.

He argued that a national side could not deliver good with only youth or with only experienced, it would be an amalgamation of both.
