Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill poles apart, India Test captain had to Fight for Sai Sudharsan in England Series: Report

By MyKhel Staff

As India finalised their squad for the upcoming Test series against England, early signs of tension appear to be surfacing between newly appointed Test captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gautam Gambhir.

According to a report by CricBlogger, a behind-the-scenes disagreement over the inclusion of Sai Sudharsan highlighted a growing difference in outlook between the two.

Gautam Gambhir and Shubman Gill

The 23-year-old Tamil Nadu opener, who impressed during IPL 2025 and has built a reputation through consistent performances in domestic and county cricket, was initially not in the coach's plans. As per CricBlogger, Gambhir opposed Sai's selection, which left several members of the selection committee surprised. It reportedly took nearly thirty minutes of persuasion from Gill - who has captained Sai in the Gujarat Titans setup - to change the outcome, eventually earning the support of all five selectors.

"Gambhir himself was a left-handed opener and opposing Sai's name didn't make much of a sense," a BCCI source told CricBlogger, hinting at the puzzlement within the board's corridors.

This isn't the only point of divergence involving the new head coach. The report also noted that Gambhir had earlier clashed with chief selector Ajit Agarkar over Shreyas Iyer's inclusion in India's Champions Trophy squad. Although Gambhir has publicly claimed to have no say in selection matters, these recurring disagreements suggest a growing informal influence that's raising eyebrows within the BCCI.

Some insiders view the development as "alarming," pointing to Gambhir's limited experience as a Test coach. With India entering a crucial transition phase in red-ball cricket, especially with Gill at the helm, questions are already being raised about whether the captain will be allowed to shape the team in his vision or whether the coach's presence will become an overriding factor.

From a performance standpoint, Sai Sudharsan's inclusion appears to be merit-based. The left-hander racked up over 600 runs in IPL 2025 at an average exceeding 55, with a century and five fifties. More importantly, his past stints in the County Championship with Surrey across 2023 and 2024 have equipped him with valuable experience in English conditions - a key factor as India head to Leeds for the opening Test.

Adding further weight to his credentials, former India head coach Ravi Shastri had previously praised Sudharsan's technique and identified him as a potential all-format mainstay for the national side.

As India gear up for a challenging five-match series in England, all eyes will be on how the team management balances input from a young captain and a high-profile coach. The Sai Sudharsan episode may just be the first glimpse into a complex power dynamic unfolding behind the scenes.
