Gautam Gambhir Backs KL Rahul as India’s Top Wicketkeeper, Says Rishabh Pant Must Wait for Chance

By MyKhel Staff

India's head coach Gautam Gambhir has firmly backed KL Rahul as the team's first-choice wicketkeeper ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Despite the presence of Rishabh Pant in the squad, Gambhir clarified that Rahul's consistent performances have cemented his spot behind the stumps, leaving Pant waiting for his chance.

Speaking at a press conference following India's ODI series against England, Gambhir stated, "KL is our No. 1 wicketkeeper and this is what I can say at the moment. Rishabh Pant will get his chance, but at the moment, it is KL who has done well, and we cannot play two wicketkeeper-batters."

KL Rahul was India's preferred wicketkeeper-batter during the recent three-match ODI series against England, where he showcased his value to the team. He struggled with the bat in the first two games, scoring 2 and 10.

However, Rahul found form in the third match with a quickfire 40 off 29 balls, helping India post a commanding total of 356. Additionally, he took three catches and effected two stumpings across the series. Rahul's consistent performances behind the stumps were also evident during the 2023 ODI World Cup.

where he scored 452 runs at an average of 75.33, including a crucial unbeaten 97 against Australia. His contributions with both bat and gloves have solidified his position as India's top wicketkeeper. While KL Rahul thrives, Rishabh Pant finds himself on the sidelines.

Since his comeback from a 15-month injury hiatus, Pant has played just one ODI, scoring six runs against Sri Lanka. Despite his explosive batting abilities, Pant remains on the bench as team management continues to prioritize Rahul's consistency.

Gambhir addressed the competition between the two, stating, "We don't look at averages and stats. We look at who can deliver when." His remarks reflect the team's strategic approach to maintaining a balanced lineup.

Gambhir's endorsement of Rahul is also influenced by team composition needs. By preferring Rahul as a keeper-batter, India maintains a flexible batting order and the option to play an additional all-rounder, like Axar Patel, who was promoted to No. 5 during the ODI series against England.

As the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 approaches, Gambhir's firm backing of Rahul suggests that Pant will have to wait for his opportunity. The competition for the wicketkeeping spot remains intense, but for now, KL Rahul is India's undisputed first choice.
