Gautam Gambhir Backs Virat Kohli for Test Captaincy Amid Rohit Sharma’s Uncertain Return

Former Indian cricketer and current head coach Gautam Gambhir has reportedly expressed his support for Virat Kohli to return as the Test captain of Team India. This comes amid uncertainty surrounding Rohit Sharma's future in the red-ball format following his recent struggles with form.

Rohit opted out of the fifth and final Test against Australia in Sydney after a string of underwhelming performances. Coach Gambhir was reportedly displeased with Rohit's approach in Test cricket.

Virat Kohli backed to become full-time Test captain by head coach Gautam Gambhir

Sources close to the development informed myKhel, "Coach Gautam Gambhir has backed the idea of Virat leading the Test team again. But he is yet to clear his stance officially."

With India's next Test assignment set to commence during the England tour in June, Kohli's proven track record as a dynamic leader makes him a strong candidate. Under his captaincy, India had taken an unassailable 2-1 lead against England in 2021 before the final Test was rescheduled due to COVID-19.

"Team India has done well under the aggressive captaincy of Virat, especially in overseas conditions. With the new World Test Championship (WTC) cycle starting, the team needs a leader like Kohli because the next line of Test leaders is still in development. In the interim, Kohli looks like the most suited option," the source added.

Jasprit Bumrah, who captained India in Australia during Kohli's absence, showcased impressive leadership skills. However, due to workload management concerns, the selectors are reportedly hesitant to assign permanent captaincy to the premier pacer.

Sources further revealed that Gambhir had a conversation with Kohli during the Australian tour about the possibility of captaining the Test side again. However, the Delhi-born batter has yet to indicate his willingness to take up the role.

As Team India looks to build a formidable side for the upcoming WTC cycle, Kohli's return to leadership could be a pivotal decision, potentially steering the team toward further success on the global stage.
