Gautam Gambhir has become 'non-playing Captain' for India, creating Toxic atmosphere: Report makes Explosive Claim

By MyKhel Staff

India suffered a humiliating defeat against South Africa by a record margin of 408 runs in the second Test in Guwahati, leading to a 2-0 series loss at home.

This crushing defeat was South Africa's first Test series win on Indian soil in 25 years and their biggest victory margin over India in Test cricket history. Indian players were bowled out cheaply in their innings, with only Ravindra Jadeja showing some resistance.

Gautam Gambhir has become non-playing Captain for India creating Toxic atmosphere Report

Following this defeat, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir delivered a strong and direct message to his players, emphasizing that playing at the highest level demands consistent performance, or else there will be serious consequences. Gambhir faced criticism not just from fans but also within the team for his central role in decision-making, including team selection and in-game tactics, to the extent of controlling the captain from outside the field.

A report from Cricblogger claims confusion over pitch conditions and strategic instructions such as urging batters to adopt a defensive approach, aiming only to survive rather than play their natural game, which frustrated several players.

As per the report, Gambhir has become a non-playing captain and his dictatorship-like approach has created a toxic atmosphere. The dressing room atmosphere has been described as toxic, carrying over issues from the troubled Australia tour earlier in the year. Sources reveal that players feel restricted emotionally, likening the environment to a "pathshala" (classroom with strict rules), where open communication and natural expression are stifled.

"In other words, he is also controlling the captain from outside," a source was quoted as saying by Cricblogger.

There are also allegations of favouritism by Gambhir toward certain players, causing divisions and insecurity within the squad, contributing to the fragile and tense environment following the series defeat. A set of players have been unconditionally backed by the head coach, while other deserving players are either waiting on the wings or warming the bench.

Despite Gambhir defending some decisions post-match, saying that the pitches were playable and blaming a lack of mental toughness and match awareness among the batsmen, both fans and insiders have questioned his leadership style and approach. As per the report, Gambhir took a flight back to Delhi and is expected to join the team before the ODI series.
