IND vs NZ: Gautam Gambhir Endorses High Risk, High Reward Strategy for Indian Test Players

India's head coach, Gautam Gambhir, expressed his support for a high-risk, high-reward strategy in Test cricket. He stated that he won't discourage players from this approach, even if it results in low scores occasionally.

This mindset was evident during India's recent Test win against Bangladesh in Kanpur, where they chased victory despite losing over two days to rain.

Gambhir Supports High Risk Approach in Tests

Gambhir emphasised the importance of playing naturally and aggressively. "Why do we need to hold on to people? If they can play the natural game, if they can get 400-500 runs in a day, why not?" he said. He reiterated his commitment to this strategy ahead of the upcoming three-match Test series against New Zealand.

Adaptability and Growth in Test Cricket

While advocating for aggressive play, Gambhir also highlighted the need for adaptability. He mentioned that the team aims to score 400 runs in a day or bat for two days if needed. "That's called growth. That's called adaptability and that's called Test cricket," he explained. Gambhir believes that sticking to one style doesn't lead to progress.

He expressed confidence in his team's ability to handle different situations without compromising their aggressive approach. "We have a lot of individuals in the dressing room who can bat for two days," Gambhir said. The primary goal remains winning matches, but drawing is an option if necessary.

Facing New Zealand's Challenge

Gambhir acknowledged New Zealand as a formidable opponent with quality players capable of challenging India. "New Zealand is a completely different challenge. We know that they're a very, very good team and they've got some really high-quality players," he noted. Despite respecting their opponents, Gambhir stressed playing hard cricket to achieve desired outcomes.

The Indian team is focused on the immediate task of facing New Zealand, despite having several significant matches lined up, including a five-Test series against Australia next month. Gambhir stated that preparing for the New Zealand series is currently their top priority.

"When you play international cricket, you don't think about how to prepare for the five Test matches in Australia," Gambhir remarked. Instead, he emphasised the importance of being ready for the upcoming match against New Zealand on 16th November at 9:30 am.

Gambhir concluded by reiterating India's commitment to playing selflessly and humbly while striving to win every match for their country. Whether facing New Zealand or Australia, the team's focus remains on delivering their best performance on the field.
