Gambhir became the first India head coach to suffer two whitewash on home soil, and days after that, he is in further trouble for off-field reasons.

As per a report from the Hindustan Times, his comments at the post-match press conference after the Kolkata Test drew particular ire, where comments on pitch conditions were perceived as deflecting blame amid the defeat, while references to his white-ball successes came across as defensive and untimely to board officials. This has amplified off-field tensions, especially as critics highlight Gambhir's tactical choices, such as over-relying on all-rounders and part-timers at the expense of specialist bowlers and batters, which undermined the team's stability in red-ball cricket.​

Despite public backing from BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, who emphasized full confidence in the coaching staff amid social media backlash, Gambhir's position remains precarious without immediate home Tests until August 2026.
