Gautam Gambhir keen to build a well-rounded Team India in T20Is by promoting versatile all-rounders

By Indranil Basu

Gautam Gambhir's approach of prioritising all-rounders in Team India mirrors his successful strategy with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Under the watchful eyes of the new India Head coach, the batters were spotted rolling their arms in the net sessions during the ongoing T20I series against Bangladesh.

Batters such as Abhishek Sharma, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Suryakumar Yadav and Rinku Singh are spotted bowling in the nets during practice sessions while a bowler like Varun Chakravarthy was also seen batting in the nets, clearly signalling a shift in Team India's approach.

During KKR's 2012 and 2014 IPL title-winning seasons, Gambhir consistently promoted versatile all-rounders like Shakib Al Hasan, Andre Russell, Yusuf Pathan, and Laxmi Ratan Shukla. These players provided balance, allowing flexibility in both batting and bowling, a key factor in KKR's success.

By applying this template to the Indian team, Gambhir seeks to build a well-rounded T20 team that can adapt to various match situations. Promoting all-rounders offers depth in batting and additional bowling options, giving the team a strategic advantage in multi-dimensional roles.

Given his history with KKR, Gambhir's emphasis on all-rounders could be part of a larger vision to ensure that India has match-winners in every position, especially in the shorter formats where all-rounders can shift the momentum of the game. Even during his stint as a mentor for KKR last year, the former India cricketer stuck to his successful strategy of promoting all-rounders.

Players like Sunil Narine, Russell, and Venkatesh Iyer were consistently given key roles within the team. Gambhir's trust in all-rounders was evident as he encouraged them to bat higher up the order and also contribute significantly with the ball. For instance, Narine and Russell, despite being recognised primarily for their bowling, were often sent up the batting order to exploit their power-hitting abilities.

Iyer, who can bat and bowl medium pace, was also entrusted with an all-round role that allowed KKR to maintain a flexible lineup. By empowering these all-rounders, Gambhir ensured that KKR had the depth and balance necessary to compete in high-pressure situations, much like he had done during his captaincy in the 2012 and 2014 seasons.

This clear emphasis on all-rounders demonstrates Gambhir's belief in the importance of players who can contribute in multiple facets of the game, and he is likely bringing the same philosophy to his role with Team India.

This approach might also be why players like Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy are co-existing. Even T20 captain Surya Kumar Yadav and Rinku Singh bowling completes the story about how Gambhir is focussed on replicating his all-round template. If they are being given prominent roles, with the potential for more all-rounders to be groomed for future success.
