Gautam Gambhir Laughs Off India Dressing Room Rift Rumours, Says 'That's What Indian Cricket Is All About'

By MyKhel Staff

Gautam Gambhir has addressed, for the first time, the swirling rumours of discord within the Indian dressing room during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) last month. His remarks came following India's commanding 4-1 T20I series victory over England, marking a significant turnaround after a challenging Test season.

India's recent resurgence in T20I cricket has been remarkable, with the team losing just three matches out of 29 since the start of 2024. This impressive run includes an unbeaten campaign that culminated in the 2024 T20 World Cup triumph under Rohit Sharma's leadership.

Despite this T20 success, Gambhir's tenure as head coach began under challenging circumstances. India suffered their first home Test series whitewash in a three-match series or more, losing the BGT 3-1 to Australia. This defeat marked Australia's first BGT victory in a decade and ended India's 27-year unbeaten ODI series record against Sri Lanka. During this turbulent phase, reports of a rift between Gambhir and captain Rohit Sharma surfaced, with claims suggesting they were not aligned on team strategies.

Addressing these speculations during a conversation with Kevin Pietersen, Abhinav Mukund, and Parthiv Patel on Star Sports, Gambhir said, "They have played a lot of cricket with each other. More importantly, a month back, there were a couple of other rumours flying around (laughs). That's what Indian cricket is all about. There will be so many things said about the dressing room when things are not going okay. But once results start going in your favour, things start falling in place."

The ex KKR mentor emphasized the strong camaraderie within the team, crediting the players' passion and dedication to representing India. "These are an incredible bunch of players. They enjoy themselves, they want to play for their country, they love playing for their country, and they know what it means to represent 140 crore Indians," he added.

Following Gambhir's appointment, Suryakumar Yadav was named captain of the T20I side. Under his leadership, the team has maintained an unblemished record, securing series victories against Sri Lanka and South Africa away from home, and Bangladesh on home soil.

Looking ahead, Rohit Sharma will return to lead the Indian team in a three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting Thursday, February 6, in Nagpur. This series marks the beginning of India's preparations for the 2025 Champions Trophy, as the team aims to build on its recent T20I success and regain dominance in the 50-over format.
