Gautam Gambhir Support Staff to Link up With Indian Team in Sri Lanka - Report

By MyKhel Staff

New head coach Gautam Gambhir's support staff is reportedly set to be confirmed with one member of the previous regime also likely to link up with the Indian team during the tour to Sri Lanka next week.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had earlier this month named Gambhir as the head coach, replacing Rahul Dravid, who vacated the role after his tenure ended following India's T20 World Cup triumph in June.

Gambhir is set for his first assignment as head coach when India visit Sri Lanka for six white-ball games - three T20Is and three ODIs, scheduled to start on Saturday (July 27). But the new head coach's backroom is yet to be announced despite just a week left for the first T20I.

However, reports have emerged, stating the support staff will be populated with two coaches likely to accompany Gambhir and the team when they fly out to Sri Lanka on Monday (July 22).

According to a report on CricBuzz, Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, who both worked with Gambhir in Kolkata Knight Riders, are set to join the Indian team coaching staff.

The report also adds that T Dilip, who worked as the fielding coach in Dravid's tenure, is likely to be retained in the new coaching staff of Gambhir. Dilip has a good connect with the players and has been commended for his team bonding excersises.

While some reports surfaced that BCCI has rejected Gambhir's plea to add Morne Morkel to support staff, CricBuzz also adds that the former South African pacer is very likely to land the bowling coach job.

Nayar and Ten Doeschate will be roped in as assistant coaches to Gambhir, while Dilip will continue as the fielding coach. Dilip and Nayar are likely to jet out with the squad to Sri Lanka. But the Dutchman Ten Doeschate's arrival is unknown.

The report added that Ten Doeschate is currently in the United States as part of the coaching staff for the LA Knight Riders in the ongoing Major League Cricket (MLC) and may join the team directly in Colombo.

Gamhir and the team are reportedly set to fly out to Sri Lanka for the six-white ball matches on Monday (July 22). It is also unclear whether Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who are only part of the ODI squad, will travel with the team on July 22.
