Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has offered advice to Shubman Gill following the young batsman's less-than-impressive performance in the first Test against South Africa at Centurion.
Gill, known for his aggressive approach, scored two and 26 in the SuperSport Park match, succumbing to pacers Nandre Burger and Marco Jansen in the respective innings, contributing to India's defeat by an innings and 32 runs.

Gavaskar, speaking on Star Sports, emphasized the need for Gill to adapt his batting style to the demands of Test cricket, highlighting the differences in ball behavior between the red ball used in Tests and the white ball in limited-overs formats. He suggested that Gill's aggressive tendencies might be better suited to T20Is and ODIs, where the ball behaves differently.
Despite Gill's success in white-ball cricket, his performance in Tests has been inconsistent, with only one fifty-plus score in 10 innings in 2023 - a hundred against Australia at home in March.
Gavaskar expressed concern about Gill's recent form, listing his scores in the traditional format for the year: 21, 5, 13, 18, 6, 10, 29 not out, 2, and 26. Gavaskar acknowledged Gill's promising start to his career, praising his shots, and expressed hope that the young talent would rediscover his form through dedicated training.
Looking ahead to the second and final Test at Cape Town starting on January 3, Gavaskar expressed optimism that Gill would find his rhythm soon. He urged Gill to adjust his approach and emphasized the importance of understanding the nuances of Test cricket, where the red ball poses unique challenges.
India, trailing 1-0 in the series after the Centurion loss, aims to level the series in Cape Town. Gavaskar's advice to Gill reflects the cricketing wisdom of adapting strategies to the demands of different formats, underscoring the significance of a well-balanced and versatile batting approach in the challenging arena of Test cricket.
